Washington Babies

Best places to shop for groceries / furniture / apartment needs / baby stuff in Seattle & around

Good morning, Seattle mommies! ?

So after making the big move to Washington a couple of months ago and staying with my in-laws for awhile, we're finally moving into our own apartment in Bellevue this weekend! Yay! ?

My husband, our 5-year old son and I are all so excited! But being new here (and with another little one coming in a couple of months!), the whole moving thing and starting over can get pretty overwhelming sometimes!!?

Anyway, this week, we're buying most of the stuff we need for the apartment as well as canvassing for things for the baby, too! Finances are really tight as we're just starting over and with a baby on the way, we need to save as much as we can! So if you guys could point us to the direction of where the best places might be for furniture (we don't mind secondhand -- except for mattresses!), kitchen tools & stuff, linen, and everything else we may need in a new apartment.. in terms of value for money, we would really appreciate it!!

We were also wondering which store gives the best value for money when it comes to groceries. We're very conscious about making sure we buy organic/ free-range/ all-natural foods but would like to know where we can buy these without having to pay ridiculous prices for it. We'll be living in downtown Bellevue so there's Safeway, Fred Meyer, Whole Foods, QFC.. But we also don't mind making short drives if we can find a place where we can buy groceries much cheaper a little further away, so any suggestions are very welcome and will be much appreciated!

Much thanks, everyone! <3

  • For groceries, I really like Fred Meyer. They have a good organic/natural section, and prices are very reasonable. As far as baby items go, I used Craigslist and eBay classifieds, and got some really nice stuff. Good luck!

  • I like the Goodwill in Bellevue :).. they have nicer used things.  And oddly, I like Target for Groceries :)..good prices, not a huge selection, but I think they have good prices. You could always try the good ole' IKEA as well :)

  • Welcome!

There's an Ikea in Tukwila that might be useful, especially for baby furniture and the non-furniture items you are looking for.  I've bought several pieces of furniture from garage sales/craigslist, too.

There is a PCC in Issaquah that isn't terribly affordable, but has lots of bulk (fruit, grains, nuts, etc.) and meets your responsible food needs :)  Anyone can shop there; members get better prices.

    Good luck with your move!

  • Fred Meyer and Haggen both have good organic selection but not sure if you have a Haggen close to Bellevue. I second Goodwill, they have a kitchen section that has brand new stuff too. I love Craigslist for furniture. You can find some great deals! Also, you should join the Facebook Seattle Bump group- there is way more traffic on there, and I'm sure if you ask, there will be people will baby stuff they want to get rid of. Also check the clearance sections when you go to Target. I find some great deals there, especially on bedding and home stuff, and they have coupons online too!

  • Another vote for Fred Meyer here-- their stuff is generally a good deal cheaper than Safeway. Plus if you have a rewards card, they send you a cash-back gift certificate and coupons quarterly.

The Goodwill in Bellevue is great-- last time I was there, the woman in front of me bought a full set of china for an unbelievable deal.

  • Fred Meyer for Groceries (There is one on Bellevue on 148th and 24th)

Ross or TJ Maxx for things like linens, kitchen tools/supplies etc.

    Good luck!!!!

  • Costco in Issaquah (yearly membership required) has a decent amount of organic. Rice, pasta, ground beef, chicken, eggs, milk, bread, cereal, and a bunch of other stuff.

I like PCC in Issaquah. If you get a membership you get 5% of on the 15th and/or 16th of every month plus a 10% off coupon in the mail every month (November and December you usually get 2.) Membership at PCC is fairly inexpensive and is a lifetime membership.

For household items and furniture I would use craigslist.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot Costco! I get giant bags of frozen organic veggies and they last forever!

  • I love the food at Whole Foods Market.  It can be a little expensive.  But it is worth it.  I love the bakery.

I find that Target has the best prices for baby food and supplies.  And there is a Babies R' Us/Toys R' Us in Bellevue.

I know a lot of people like Ikea for cheaper baby/kid furniture.  It is in Renton.

  • Thank you so much for all the tips, everyone! ?

And just in case anyone else is interested to know, my husband and I checked out Value Village in Redmond the other day and scored some pretty good deals -- a wooden shoe rack for $4, nice placemats for $0.89 each and a big Thomas the Train puzzle that our 5-year-old spotted for just $3! ;-)

Btw, blueLu, how can i look up the Seattle Bump page on FB? I can't seem to find it.  :(

  • The ValueVillage in Redmond rocks, I shop there a lot!

For groceries, I LOVE Trader Joe's.

And I really like Craigslist for other stuff. Also, there are a bunch of great consignment shops for kids...

Treehouse in Redmond and small threads in Issaquah are my two favorites.
