Stocking up on diapers during pregnancy!

My DH and I found out we are expecting on Saturday and want to start stocking up on diapers now to avoid last minute trips to the store and having an easier time budgeting (so I can spoil the newborn too Big Smile ) Has anyone else done this? And what would you recommend? My sister-in-law says to buy one newborn, but she doesn't know what else. UGH. Please help. :D

Re: Stocking up on diapers during pregnancy!

  • I've been a moderator on a coupon board for almost 7 years.

After much research, this was my final stock-up recommendation. You obviously don't have to go as far as I did, but I also didn't have to buy diapers for my DS whole first year.

  • I think that you will find that you have a preference for a certain type of diapers so I wouldn't worry too much about stocking up now. Pampers worked best on my kids and I found Huggies to be useless (to the point that I'd only use them if I was desperate). But I know a lot of people that preferred Huggies. I think I actually ended up giving away a lot of the non-Pampers that I had gotten as a shower gift. Just have a pack of newborns and 1s by the time you go into labor and you will be fine.

Congrats on your pregnancy! You seem excited!

  • I am so so glad I didn't stock up early. Both girls grew out of some sizes very quickly and each only had one brand that worked well for them (one got rashes from any other brand, the other managed to squirt poop out the back of any other brand!) and they did not use the same brand as each other! I would never have known either of the issues they had until after they were born, so had I stocked up on a different brand they would have sat unused, the money wasted!

  • Thank you both this helps a lot! I didn't even think about the brands and such. OMG. Yes, I am so so so so sooooo excited. This will be my DH and I's first child and we can't control our happiness and just want to tell everyone. (Although, we are trying to wait until after my first DR appointment)
  • I would not stock up. Your baby's body might not fit well in certain diaper brands. I HATE Huggies. I'd be in a world of hurt if I'd stocked up. Also, DD stayed in diaper sizes for a long time, but DS raced through them. Hard to predict. I buy Target brand which is usually still cheaper than brand names on sale.

  • OMG. No one wants squirting poop! I like this idea a lot. Putting money aside or on to gift cards, even to Walmart, seems like the best idea to me!
  • Any brands that you get that don't work for you sell REALLY fast on Craigslist.

You're going to get a lot of naysayers on the whole stocking up thing, but it was a lifesaver for me.

  • I don't stock up, but I do purchase a reloadable gift card from Walmart and Target (the 2 stores I do most of my grocery shopping) and each time I go in, I add $15 to the gift cards.  By the time baby arrives, I've got a nicely loaded gift card and use that to purchase diapers as I need them.
  • Instead of stocking up on diapers, I would stock up on grocery store gift cards, that way you don't have to even budget for diapers, you'll already have put the money away. You may find that one diaper works better for your DC than another and then you'll be stuck with a ton of diapers that are the wrong brand.

  • I bought all Ds' diapers at BJ's and they often have coupons for $5 of a case of diapers.  I found that Luvs worked just as well for DS as well as the BJ's brand.  I usually bought whichever worked out to be cheaper per diaper after sales and coupons.  I also used cloth diapers, which is something you could stock up on if you want to save money.  They aren't nearly as hard to use as you would think.  This was our favorite brand.

  • Ditto the other posters - instead of stocking up on diapers (which then you need to store), just buy a gift card each time you stop into the store.  We had a HUGE stockpile of Target giftcards by the time both our kids were born, so any time I went for formula, baby stuff, or diapers, we brought a gift card and didn't need to worry about it quite so much.  AND - having 9 months to prepare and stock up made it not quite so painful when we actually had to spend the money!

For choosing brands -- both my kids ended up super sensitive and Target diapers didn't work (gave them rashes), Pampers diapers and Luvs did the same (too much scent), but Huggies worked awesome.  You'll figure it out when the baby comes!

     Congrats!

  • I didn't stock pile but I did have a bunch of diapers by the time LO was born.  While pregnant Costco had a coupon for $5 or so off a box of diapers so we bought a box of size 1-2 and a box of size 3.  They also had a coupon for their wipes, we bought a few boxes of those!  I also received many packages at my shower and various other events.

I have been lucky and haven't really had a problem with any brand of diaper or wipe-although I do have preferences.

This falls into the all babies are different realm but my LO was in Newborn diapers (and clothes) for about 6 weeks.  She was 6lbs13oz at birth.  I am sure size 1s would have fit a little earlier.

  • Oh and we used NB size diapers for 1 month.  DS was 7 lbs at birth but lost a lot of weight in the first few days and went down to 6 lbs 2oz.  He was also in NB size clothes for a month and only outgrew them in length since he was a skinny little guy at first because of BF'ing issues, but that's another post :)
  • I personally would not stock up on much of anything - I love the gift card idea or just putting the money aside in a "baby bank account" type of thing.  You won't know what you really need or like until baby arrives.  You might need preemie size and you might totally skip the newborn ones.  As long as you have the basics at home for that 1st week or so, you can then go shopping or send someone else for you.  I had a box of newborn size and one of the next size up and that was it.  Same thing with bottles and a lot of others - you might think one brand is the way to go but your baby might have a totally different thought on that.  Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy.

  • another diaper note ... i was a total diaper snob with my first. i never tried the generic brands from target or walmart until I had my 2nd and i love them. they happen to work great (for Ethan) and save us a lot of money.

    congrats on your pregnancy!!

  • Ditto the gift cards. I actually do it for xmas shopping. I buy my gift cards at the grocery store (so i can earn gas points) and save them in a box for xmas shopping. Every week i buy $15-25 in gift cards to various places (mainly toys r us) and then i'll all set come December.
