I know everyone posts asking questions about potty training....
I started the 3-day PTing (underwear only) on Sunday. Day One I had the potty in the bathroom, and was trying to take him in to his potty every half hour. That day there was pee everywhere but the potty! So, Day Two I kept the potty in whatever room we were in, and we started having success. Now (Day Five) he's kind of got the hang of it. He'll pee on the potty, and he's pooed once on the potty. He only had one accident yesterday, and so far today no accidents.
So here's my question....
He'll say he needs to pee, and sit on the potty. But, a lot of the time he doesn't do anything. It might take 2 or 3 times of him doing this before he actually pees. He wants me to sit with him every time. This is taking up a lot of my time (btw: I'm home on maternity leave with him right now). Did/does anyone else's kid do this? Should I just stick this out, or try harder to get him to go on his own? My instinct is to just wait it out, since it's only Day 5, and he does need help getting his underwear and pants up and down. But, I just thought I'd ask, and see if anyone else was experiencing the same thing?
Also, I haven't taken him out of the house yet. Should I keep with the underwear when we go out, or use a Pull-up diaper?
Re: Potty training question...
Just keep trying. He might be saying he needs to go a lot and doesn't go because he might "feel" like he has to go. And thats okay.
DD wanted me to come with her every single time and yes it felt like i spent the day in the bathroom! I started underwear only then gave her pullups at night and realized in 2 days she can hold it. She has been fully potty trained since Nov 1st. She has had maybe 2 or 3 accidents at night time. She still likes me to go in there. but now I say i'll meet you in there. But for the first full week or 2 i went in there. I would say to her I can't hear her pee. Even now when i'm in there with her.(not all the time) she would say...can you hear it now? like as a joke. But just keep going in there i know its exhausting but once he really getts the hang of it..he will go on his own.
As for taking him out. I was a little worried too. I would always make sure she went before we left. If its a long car ride i might opt to put on the pull ups. I have a 10 hour drive next week with her and i'm a little nervous all though I can just pull over and bring her to the bathroom. But what if I take too long? thats why i might give her the pull up for just the ride.
When i started the potty training...i would ask her every 5 mins to keep reminding her about going on the potty.
good luck and keep trying! sorry i just rambled on!
Part One: LO is probably still figuring out the urge to pee and not to pee. Whether or not LO was going to poop was the most confusing for my LO to figure out. She would confuse passing gas with pooping but eventually that straightened out. We did this a lot for the first month, then it tapered off. Occasionally, we still just sit up there.
Part Two: Stick it out I think. LO has been PT'd for a 3 months now (not counting the two months it took to reach an accident free state) and while she can get her underwear off by herself, getting on and off the toilet needs some work. And even then she won't sit there by herself. I think my nephews were maybe 3 - 4 years old (PT at 2) before they would go to the bathroom by themselves all the time.
This is up to you. My LO doesn't care about panties vs pull-ups and she does not have any regressions due to the diaper like feel of pull-ups. Therefore I use pul-ups on our trips out, plus we trained in pull-ups so she was already used to them. However, that may not be true for other toddlers. Keep the trips out very short at first with a potty break seconds before you leave home then go potty again the second you get home. Gradually work up to longer times. We can safely leave for about 3 hours now but at first it was just a 20-30 minute trip to the store and back.
Yes that's what they did and it has it's benefits. Primarily, the child should realize faster what is going on (I feel this urge and then pee runs down my legs) and what they need to do about it (I feel this urge so I should run to the potty).
With pull-ups, you don't have such an obvious and immediate cause and effect for the child to learn from. Even the pull-ups that are supposed to get cold when the pee hits them are barely noticeable cold, plus the pee had to hit a certain part of the pull-up to create the cold effect I think. Great idea in theory, but not so good in actual use IMO. And the ones with the fading image are also a nice idea but still it takes some time for the image to fade and you lose that immediate cause and effect the child needs to learn from.
