Wedding ring... help!

Long story short, I tried to see if my wedding ring still fit on my fat fingers, and now it is stuck.  We tried for over an hour with lotions, oils, an ice bath, holding my hand over my head for ages, and wrapping dental floss around my finger.  That sucker is NOT going anywhere.  I'd HATE to have it cut off.  :(  There is no pain, but it's definitely tight.  I read online that as long as there is no pain, it's okay to leave on...?

We thought about going to the ER last night (because tugging on it made my whole finger purple), but I don't want to pay the ridiculous $$ if I don't have to.  Has anyone had this happen to them?  I'm hoping my OB might have the ability to take it off because I'm guessing that this is a pretty common issue during pregnancy--my appt is Wednesday.

Re: Wedding ring... help!

  • Oh my goodness! I'm no help at all cause everything I can think to do, you've already tried. I guess maybe call your OB and ask them if they have new ideas? I've been taking mine off to sleep at night because I usually get warm and my hands swell....I'm thinking it's soon time to put the rings on a chain and wear around my neck!

  • Yeah, that happened to me once randomly over the summer. I tried everything and couldn't get it off. I tried everything you have listed here and more. I went to the ER to get it removed since it was like 6am and learned one important lesson: skip the ER and go to a jewelry store, they will remove it for free. (This is assuming your ring is a soft metal like white or yellow gold, not platinum. I'm not sure a jeweler would have something to remove a platinum ring from your finger.). It only cost about $30 to get it put back together and re-sized.

Sorry it got stuck, I know how bad that sucks!

  • A jeweler told me to use windex if this happens!  I've never tried it, but just what I heard.  Good luck!

  • I think you should relax for a couple of days, don't eat ANY salt, and stop playing with it. You are probably making your finger more swollen by tugging on it. My fingers always swell first thing in the morning, so that's probably the worst time to mess with it. Good luck! I hate that feeling. A few times over the summer I wore mine to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with my finger throbbing.
  • I agree with PP.  Before you have it cut off, I would avoid salt and try everyday.  Drink lots of water also.

  • Mine won't come off, either, but it doesn't hurt and so far isn't cutting off my circulation, so I'm not too worried about it.  I guess I'm still hoping I won't have to get it cut off and it will all go back to normal a few weeks after birth.  If I'm wrong, I'll go to a jeweler, because the tactics I read online didn't work for me.

The main one we tried is wrapping your finger in floss.  Holding a glass of cold water beforehand was also recommended, to get swelling down.  But if you already tried this combo, I'm tapped.  Good luck!

  • A friend got her ring off by soaking her hand in ice water.  Have you tried that? Good luck!

  • Go hang out outside in the cold for a bit.  My rings are always loose after spending 30 minutes at the park with DD!  A friend had hers cut off at the fire station.  They were happy to help.  Hope it doesn't come to that though!

  • This! My husband got a ring stuck on his finger at the jeweler's store. It slipped right off when they sprayed the windex on it. Hope it works for you!

THIA don't cut it off yet. Hold your hand under cold water for as long as you can stand and see if that helps with the swelling.

This is a trick that I had an ER doc teach me. It works its just kinda tricky to do on your self here are some directions I found :

  • I am no help on this, I would have said cold water and dental floss at the same time. Windex seems like a good try as well. I guess that Im the only weirdo that my rings are too big and I am flinging them off everywhere. I know that they will be too small closer to end of pregnancy. I guess my body just wants to gain weight everywhere else but in my hands... my huge thighs are hogging it all right now :(

Good Luck with the ring, let us know what works for you so that when I get mine stuck in a few weeks I wont have to resort to cutting it off.
