Baby Names

Are the initials "BJ" horrible for a boy?

Just wanted to get some feedback on giving our DS2 a name that starts with a B when our last name starts with a J.  DH and I stayed away from B names when we named DS1, but now tend to like a lot of boy names that start with a B.  We're both fine with it, but just thought I'd see what you all thought.  Will he get teased endlessly in middle/high school?

  • If he's going to get teased, it doesn't matter what his initials are, kids wil find a way to tease him. I personally don't see a problem with the initials BJ.

  • Interesting.  I went to middle and high school with two guys whose actual names (nicknames, I imagine) were BJ.  It never occurred...and they were cool guys they didn't get teased.

I don't think people would even put those initials together.

PS. We're naming our son Luke:) You have good taste!

  • I don't think kids think to much about initials. It's not like you'd nn him BJ. I don't think it's a big deal.

  • I wouldn't do it.

My ex had a best friend who went by BJ. He did get the occasional joke, but mostly noone had a problem with it. I think it would be much different for a kid like Ben Jameson or something like that because you don't automatically think "BJ!".

  • I don't think its that big of a deal. If you really love a name that starts with B, then the initials BJ shouldn't stop you.

  • Thanks Ladies.  Your responses have been very helpful.   It makes me feel less concerned about some of the names on our list!

  • I knew two guys in college that went by BJ as their first name and no one thought much of it. I wouldn't let the initials stop you especially if it's a last name and he wouldn't ever be called BJ.

  • Personally, it would bother me. I had a girl name set (if we had a girl) with initials SAC...and then I had to change it cuz it bugged me too much

  • Kids will find a way to tease if they are going to tease no matter how hard you try.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I am in the same boat with BJ initials. We're going for it. I am glad I read all the positive feedback from your post because it just further cements the name we love!

  • My husbands initials are BJ and he did get picked on, but the only people who called him that were stuck up bullies who got away with everything at his school b/c they played football.

  • Fine by me. I had classmates that went by the name "B.J." - it never occurred to me that they were initials for anything other than an embarrassing name like Bartholomeus Jehovah or something.  He never got teased - he was short and never got teased for being short either.  I think we teased him some for having tiny feet and hands though.  Wink

  • My husband and 2 of my friends' husbands have BJ initials... one actually goes by the nickname BJ... We teased them, mildly, in college, but I don't think it was ever a real issue for any of them. They all grew into fine adults with no lingering effects of their slightly unfortunate initials.

  • DH actually goes by BJ (his first and middle initials).  He very rarely heard remarks on his name and wasn't really ever teased about it.  It's not like BJs are bad things...haha.

  • I don't know if he'll get teased, but I wouldn't do it. I think of blowjobs when I hear the initials (maybe I'm just like, incredibly immature). Even though I wouldn't tease a kid, I do think of it. I imagine I can't be the only adult that would silently be thinking of oral sex when the kid introduces himself.
  • I went to highschool with a BJ. His name isn't short for anything; it's just BJ. It's awful.
  • Personally I would not give any child the initials BJ. It is true that kids will get teased with any name, but why give them another reason to tease your child.

  • I think its awful, but DH's best friend is married to a "Brendon James" and he chooses to go by BJ.

  • hmmm...the responses kind of seem 50/50.  i don't think we'll rule out names beginning with B, but maybe we'll look further down our list too.  thanks for all the feedback!

  • I had a friend in college who's initials and nickname were BJ, he never got picked on about. He was a pretty cool kid and was a funny guy, to make fun of his name would've been pointless.
  • I think they are fine for coincidental initials, but it would be horrible to call him BJ as a nickname.
