Talk to me about PE Tubes/ENT Consult

Amelia has had a ton of ear infections and they are really hard to treat.  We were referred to an ENT and see Dr. Za pa ta tomorrow.  I'm assuming she will recommend tubes but I guess we shall see.

For those of you who have seen an ENT or gotten tubes for your LO do you have any reccomendations for questions I should ask tomorrow?  If you decided not to do tubes why was that? If your LO got tubes are you happy with that decision?

Re: Talk to me about PE Tubes/ENT Consult

  • DS had tubes right after he turned two, don't regret it for a sec. Every time the congestion started I knew a EI was next and he always needed strong antibiotics. He hasn't needed antibiotics since. His hearing was also affected so his language exploded after tubes because he could hear clearly. His adenoids were removed as well and I believe this helped him too. Now keep in mind tubes does not mean EI's will be gone forever. We were just lucky but I know a lot of kids still get EI's but not as frequent.

  • We did tubes back in May, because DD pretty much had non-stop EIs (every flipping cold she got led to an EI).  She has had maybe 1 EI a month since getting tubes, so while they help, they haven't stopped them. I'm a little frustrated with that, but it's much better than it used to be, and for that I am happy.  Oh, and actually, one of the biggest differences the tubes made has been with her hearing - it improved drastically after tubes.  I'm guessing you'll see an audiologist too, and I'd definitely let that be a factor in your decision.

The procedure itself is no big deal.  I'd ask how early in the am they can schedule her, if you go that route, as they can't eat beforehand.  At the place we went to, they scheduled surgeries in order of age, youngest first.

  • DD had a ton of EIs her first year.  We went to the ENT consult and they did rec tubes.  I did some research and was pretty much anti-tube, and the ENT consult didn't really provide any compelling reasons (IMO) to do them.

We always discovered DD's EI when she was stopped up for a few days or running a fever.  She was never a screaming, miserable mess with the EIs.  If she had a second of misery, I would have done the tubes asap.

So far, she's only had one EI this year and her speech/development is not delayed in any way.
