Airbags

What's the deal? I suddenly realized that if I was gonna get them de-activated, now is the time. Is it safer to have them when your pg or to not?

Re: Airbags

  • As someone who has been in a severe car accident at 20 weeks pregnant PLEASE KEEP YOUR AIRBAGS!!! My DS wouldn't have made it had the airbag not deployed and cushioned the impact. The hospital said if I had hit the steering wheel with full impact it would have caused a severe amount of damage because it would have been a direct blow. The airbag is definitely there for a reason and I would not deactivate it for any reason.

  • I fully agree with MrsColvin. DO NOT deactivate them! Seriously. The risk is too great. Sit as far back as you can if you're worried. In all honesty, you should be at least 10" back from your steering wheel anyway. Just sit a little further back than you normally do and drive with extra caution. That's your best defense (a great offense). Also, pull the lap belt portion of your seatbelt down so it sits over your hips and UNDER your belly.

  • I can't think of any logical reason to deactivate them.  They are there for safety.

  • I'm keeping mine on for safety's sake. I nearly got into a horrible accident the day before Thanksgiving at 11.5w.

  • As an EMT and Firefighter, my professional opinion is to keep your airbags activated.  The airbag can save your life.  If you don't survive an accident, good odds are that your LO won't either.  Your LO right now is cushioned in it's own protective encasement, like being inside a water balloon.  The impact from the seatbelt and the airbag will be minimal but could save you from death or serious injury.
