Help my skin! Home remedies?

Does anyone have any remedies for horribly dry, itchy skin? I got the store brand version of Eucerin Calming Cream today but it's not enough. I've heard oatmeal baths are supposed to be good, but something tells me I cannot just shake a cup of Quaker Oats into my bath water...

 Thanks in advance!

  • Actually, you can shake a cup of Quaker Oats (not the instant stuff) into your bath water.  Try having an oatmeal bath, then massage in the lotion and top off with Vaseline.

I'd use aquaphor instead of vaseline (personal preference) and skim the oatmeal out of the tub before you drain it so you don't clog it.

You need something intense, like a balm. Aquaphor, or 100% Pure makes an all-natural one.

  • I've done vaseline with socks/gloves at night when things got really bad. Once that was cleared up though I've started slathering coconut oil all over myself right out of the shower. So far it's kept me from needing to go back to a vaseline treatment.

  • Put lotion on within 3 minutes after bath.  Never use pump lotion.    If you reapply lotion throughout the day, get th skin damp first.  Get a humidifier for your bdrm.

  • A friend used to do a twist on the oatmeal thing for her sons when they had dry skin. She would put the oatmeal in pantyhose and use it like a wash ball. YOu'd still get the benefits of the oatmeal minus the mess.
"What are you having?" "Well the radiologist says its a healthy little human baby. I'm a little disappointed, because I really wanted a puppy." LOL

  • I have the huge tubs of Aquaphor in both showers and at the changing table. My derm recommended that I put it on last in the shower; after I was clean, but still had open pores.  He said it gets soft like warm butter and to apply it on while the water is still running.  If you feel greasy, you put on too much.  Pat dry when out of shower.

He also recommended that I use it on my face when accutane (a heavy duty acne medicine) dried it to helll (when I was in HS) and I outright refused to use such a greasy product on my very acne prone skin.  Well, I went 2 winters with horribly dry, blotchy, imperfect skin, until one day I tried it.  OMG, not only was the dryness & blotchyness gone, but my skin cleared up!  And I have never had better skin.

  • Sorry, ladies, that was a total post-and-run, as my husband came out 10 minutes later with Aveeno oatmeal bath packets. I am trying the Aquaphor-in-the-shower trick tonight, thank you all for the great suggestions!

  • 3 or 4 drops of tea tree oil in your bath water can help.  My mom used to have itchy dry skin all the time until she started using tea tree oil.
