D.C. Area Babies

my weekend from hell

or is it more accurate to say "to hell?"

We went to PA to visit DH's grandparents, it's a longass trip, I figured w/ stops for kids to pee, run around, it may take us 6hrs. We left at 8:15am and didn't get there til 5:45pm. When we were 7.3 miles away, the only road to get us where we needed to was closed! So we had to take a 20mi detour, the 1st 10mi the GPS kept saying "make a U-turn"

Why did it take us so long, you ask? We stopped to use a bathroom and on the way out, DD's hand got caught b/w the door and the frame (on the part of the door where the hinges are), this was a large, heavy door; there was a lot of blood, I could tell right away her nails got moved, she was screaming, I was crying. DH came out of the bathroom w/ DS, took one look and said we need the nearest ER. Thankfully, there was one less than 2mi away, we rushed there, literally, he was running red lights.

They took us in right away, gave DD some pain meds and then we waited and waited and they finally X-Rayed her. The whole time, DS was having the best time, he was the happiest person in the hospital, so many cool buttons and levers to pull and make noises! I got all the paperwork, prescriptions, and the X-Ray on CD (patting myself on the back for thinking of that one).  One of the bones was broken, when we later looked at the X-Ray, we could see where it chipped; the other finger (2 were hurt) had nothing broken. We then drove to Super Walmart in huge traffic (hello, 2 weeks before X-Mas in rural PA), waited 40mins to get our prescription filled, while trying to keep DS from knocking down everything in the store.

We went onto the grandparents' and spent less than 24 hrs there.  The drive home was not great, DS was not happy for the last 1.5hrs or so.

This morning, I took DD to the pedi who prescribed another Rx and gave me the names of some hand orthopedists.  I got to work 9:30, only to get a call at 11 that DD was in pain, so I rushed home, got her meds, went to pre-school and gave it to her, fully expecting her to want to go home, she didn't ask, so I took the time and did laundry and went to get the Rx from this morning, then I picked her up early and we went to the orthopedic surgeon.

The good news is that the chipped bone will heal on its own, probably w/n a couple weeks b/c she's only 3. The bad news is that the nail bed needs to be operated on. Basically the nails came out and are not inside the skin like they should be, so they need to be put back in. It makes total sense.

Of course, I am a mess, they are gonna put my baby under and cut open her fingers!!  Not how I planned to spend my Friday.

She's doing remarkably well of course but I am not sure I will when I have to see her knocked out on Friday. DH and I will both go. If anyone has had any experience with Dr. Paul Mechrikunnel, please LMK. He has good reviews online.

THIS SUX!!!!! It was just a stupid accident  :(  :(  :(

  • That is terrible, I'm so sorry! I'm sure she will get through it with no problem, but that's probably not very comforting when you see her in pain.  This is the part of parenting that sucks.

    Good luck on Friday!

  • That does sound like the weekend from hell. I hope all goes well with surgery, your DD is feeling better soon, and that this is all a distant memory someday.

  • Oh my God that is so horrible. :(  Poor little girl. I hope she's young enough that she won't remember this in a few years. How is she doing now? Is her hand all bandaged up?

  • Wow, what an awful weekend.  No worries about Friday, believe me, surgery is always harder on the family then the patient.  I speak from being on both ends. My son had a minor procedure at 14 weeks old, but my husband and I knew the surgeon and the anesthesiologist as well as the procedure so we were quite possibly the most calm parents ever (there are some perks to being in healthcare). Where are you having the procedure done?  You'll both do great :)
  • OMG that is horrible!  Your poor baby girl!  :-(  It sounds like she is taking it better than you though.  ((HUGS))  I hope the surgery is quick and easy on you both

  • Oh Sofka that is terrible. I am so sorry. I hope your DDs surety goes well on Friday. We'll be thinking of you. I am certain it will be hardest on you, your DD is a trooper.
  • thank you, you ladies are the best.

All she kept asking for was a band-aid, which made the ER nurses laugh. She had a little splint on too but the Dr said we can take it off, just keep the band-aids on and keep it dry.

She is doing really well!  Friday may be a little different but I know it'll be harder on me than her. We are going to Reston, as this Dr does surgeries there.

  • Oh, no poor E!  K has had two tubes surgeries and it was always worse for me than her.  Hang in there - she's going to be okay (and you too).  Let me know if you guys need anything.
  • Oh my, that is quite a weekend. I'm so sorry to hear about her fingers and I hope the procedure goes okay on Friday. That is so easy to do with little kids - they put their hands everywhere.

  • That sounds horrible--I'm so sorry!!  Two reassuring comments (I hope;): 1.  my sister got the door closed on her fingers when she was about the same age, lost the nail and everything came back just fine (and we can now laugh about the incident and how she walked around for weeks holding her hand out). and 2. DD#2 had minor surgery at Reston Surgery Center for blocked tear ducts when she was just about a year old--they had to put her under--and the nurses and staff there were wonderful!!
  • Holy moly. Reading that makes me cringe! Your poor DD (and poor mom too!)

I bet you won't be going up to PA again anytime soon! ;)

  • I never want to make that trip, I would much rather go to the cookie GTG!! Last year I got out of going b/c DS was so small.

To make it just a little worse, Friday is her first "show" at pre-school, she's been learning songs for it, and I was going to take time off to see her!

DD is showing her boo-boo to everyone and tells the story of how it happened very matter-of-factly LOL

  • What a tough little girl! Good for her! I'm so, so sorry either one of you had to go through this - it DOES sound like the weekend from hell. I know she'll be fine on friday but i'll think of you both. It sounds like she's a champ and going to go through this with the fabulous resilience kids have.

  • oh gosh, i'm so sorry this happened and i'm super glad that it's not worse. i hope DD is feeling better each day and that the surgery goes really well on Friday. i'll be thinking of you guys.

this is my horror story. i did the same thing as a child, only i got my fingers slammed in a large van door (the sliding door). nothing was broken, fortunately, but i am now horrified of closing doors. tomas is 5 and i have only just begun allowing him to close the car door. it still terrifies me.
