We just found out that we will be expecting our second child in August (YAY!). DS has a milk protein allergy and I was wondering if anyone was told during their subsequent pregnancies to do anything differently then the first. (I.e. eat/drink more dairy or abstain completely?)
Re: Preventing allergies with #2
DS#1 was allergic to milk protein, but grew out of it by the time he was 2. When I was pregnant with DS#2, our pediatrician said there was a slightly increased risk that he would have the same allergy (since it ran in the family... DH was allergic, too, as a child). Sure enough, DS#2 is allergic as well.
On a positive note, I will say that because we went thru the diagnosis and elimination diet with DS#1, I knew what to look for and was better prepared for DS#2.
Congratulations on your pregnancy, too!
my allergist just told me to eat everything in moderation. I ate soooo much PB when pregnant with DS1 and a LOT of eggs.. she said that's not why he has these allergies, but moderation is key.
You still need the calcium so perhaps don't drink too much milk, but have calcium enriched juice also. Tums has a lot of calcium which is what i take since i don't drink milk.
OH and a big fat congrats! happy and healthy 9 months!
pretty much this. although our oldest hasn't grown out of his allergies yet. OUr allergist did say that while the chances of a seond kiddo having allergies goes up if the first does- he rarely sees cases where a family has mulitple kids with a lot of different/severe food allergies. Our oldest is severely allergic to eggs, dairy, wheat, peanuts and mildly to bananas. Our youngest seems to have a mild./moderate allergy to eggs and milk and seems ok with other foods so far (but we haven't tried them other than through my milk).
The good news is that you know what to look for and already have an allergist to talk to.
