Car Seat for tall babies that work w/ Snap & Go?

I registered this weekend and decided to go with the snap & go for the first 6-9 months and then a very light weight traditional stroller afterwards.  Weight is important as I live in an apt and have multiple doors and steps and things to get to and from my apt.

The best recommended/rated one on consumer reports is the Chicco keyfit & keyfit 30.  However, they only go up to 30 inches.  Both DH & I are tall (6'3 & 5'10) and  expect to have a tall baby.

Any recommended infant carseats that fit into the baby trend or graco snap & go?

  • My DH is 6'5 and I'm 5'10.. this worked great for us.

  • Thanks.  I'll check these out.  I got a very lightweight traditional stroller and regular car seat which I know I'll be using well before the first year.  My thought was that if I am going to register for the infant car seat & snap & go, I don't want to choose a pricey model that my baby will grow out of immediately.  Some of them go up to 32 or 33 inches so that's more what I am thinking.

  • DS was small when he was born (I'm short and DH is no longer short, but was very VERY slow to grow when he was young).

We had the Chicco KeyFit 30 and DS outgrew the length at 9 months old.  At 26 months, he is still nowhere close to the 30 lbs though.  The added expense of that extra however many pounds was a waste for us.  Oh well.  Lesson learned.

  • You can find travel systems that have a lightweight stroller. Thats what we did. Granted, our bucket seat's weight limit was like 22lbs, but honestly? At that point I was done lugging the darn thing upstairs to the apt. Car seat + 20something lb baby = very heavy. He was in his convertible seat by 7mos.

  • The Britax Chaperone and Graco Snugride 35 both have higher height limits of 32" and will work with Snap n Go type strollers.

All of this.  DS outgrew his Chicco carseat hieght wise by 7 months (and he's always been 90th percentile or greater for height).  He was only about 20 pounds but I didn't want to lug that thing anymore.

I would just pick the seat you like assuming it has a reasonable height limit.  An inch or 2 won't make a huge difference.

  • One thing I have learned you can?t predict your child?s size go with what you like and what will work with your car.  We had to Chico keyfit 30/Snap n Go and loved it.  My DD was in the car seat until 15 months, I stopped using the Snap n Go before she was a year.  I know a lot of moms move their LOs out of the infant seat before they reach the limits because once your child hits a certain weight lugging around the bucket is a pain.  For me I just left it in the car like a convertible and took it out sometimes once she got heavier.

By the time your kid hits 30 inches, it's going to be time for a convertible anyway. And, by that time, you should probably be looking into getting a long term stroller. My son is tall and we used the Graco Snugride 35 until about 7 months and then switched over. We used the SNG maybe 5 times total when he was tiny and went with the CityMini stroller the rest of the time.

I agree.  By 30 inches your baby is going to be too heavy to lug around in a carrier.  You can do it, but it won't be comfortable going up and down stairs.  It would be much easier to just carry the child on your hip.

  • DS was out of baby carrier at 6 months way before he hit height and weight requirements, he just wanted to sit up and see the world.  So I would go with something with at least a 30 inch height requirement, you should be good till at least 6 months if not a little longer.

  • We did the Snap & Go with the SnugRide 35 (goes up to 32") and loved it!  No complaints!  (we're tall too!)

We did this too and it worked just fine for us.  We switched to an umbrella stroller at 6months.  (Jogging stroller when we need it)

My son can still use his snugride - at 1 year he is only 21lbs and 28inches, we just don't because it's a pain to lug around.  It's now the Grandma car carseat.

  • Consult this link, it gives the harness heights of all of the infant car seats.  Harness height is what matters, not the weight limit.  But, all of the larger seats seem pretty similar.

I third this! We had a tall boy and we got the Chicco Keyfit and he was out of it at 4 months because with his weight (about 20 lbs I believe) and carseat weight, it was extremely heavy to lug him around in it, even walking more than 50 feet with it was too much, even for DH and he is strong! The higher height/weight infant carseats weigh more than the smaller ones.
