Going back to school.....

So I am thinking about returning to school next fall to become a registered dietitian. I will have to go the full 4 years bc most of my classes will not transfer. I am 35 weeks pregnant, so we could be having our son anytime now. Do you guys think I'm crazy for wanting to go back to school with a 8 month old? Are any of you in school or returning after you have your little one? And working a full time job?

Re: Going back to school.....

  • I absolutely plan on going back to school. I already have a BS in criminal justice and I plan on goin back to get my paralegal certification. It is a 2 year program and I am not sure if my credits I have already received will apply or not. However, I will not be working, so this will make it easier than if I was.

  • My daughter was 2 when I started college and I did it as a single mom, but I was blessed to not have to work more than 2 days a week.  I had a lot of financial aid for being a single mom, as well as help from my grandparents.  In hindsight, it seemed easier than working 40 hours a week.  I was able to be home more hours withher eevn though I was studying.  She was very self sufficient and she would do art projects and things like that at her desk and I would study at my desk.

Occasionally I would get stuck and have to bring her to lecture halls with me and she would sit and copy statistical formulas in her little notebook and take notes too.  It was so cute.

Do you plan to go to school full time and work full time?  That sounds really hard.  But it can be done.

  • I recently graduated high school (I'm young, I know) and I found out I was PG the Monday after graduation. I decided to put off school, and even though SO many people have said "Oh, don't put it off, you'll never go back!" I DO NOT regret waiting; I know that I wouldn't be able to handle it with the fatigue and general crapiness of pregnancy. I'm a wimp. LOL.

That said, I plan on enrolling next fall. I was seriously considering starting in January, but then I decided I would probably need time to adjust to having a baby. So I'm waiting until September rolls around to start. The program I will be in is mainly online and I'll only be required to attend one night class every other week. I'm only taking on as much as I can handle, and if you're going to do then same, then by all means GO TO SCHOOL! lol

  • I'm in grad school for my MBA, and I've got finals next week as I wrap my semester.  I'm taking the spring semester off, but I still have four classes left before I get my MBA, which I'll probably spread out between two or three semesters.  I also do work full-time and own my own side business part-time.  I don't know how I'll manage to do it all, but I plan on it!  I say go for it!

  • I'll be taking only one class next semester.  I hope I don't deliver on a class day!  I've already discussed it with the professor, and I've taken her classes before, she's very much willing to work with me as long as I stay within alotted absences.  The class is only two hours/week, so my mom will watch LO.  Hopefully I can keep up with the homework!  I just want to finish!

  • I plan to return to school and work(hopefully fulltime) once my baby is a bit older. I'd say do it as long as you have a strong support system then go for it!

  • I did about the same thing!  Except my program was only a year long and DS was 6 mos old. Going to class and doing homework was such a welcome break from diapers and nap schedules and all things baby. I haven't even remotely regretted it (I have my teaching certificate now and love my new career!)
  • Thank you for asking this!  I thought I was crazy too!  I'm planning on going back to school for nursing starting April.  Will be taking mostly online courses so I can spend more time at home, then when I have to go to school, it will be a much lighter workload.  I have my environmental science, but I'm starting to hate it already, always out of town and I don't want to move from my quaint little town so opportunity is limited.  Its completely different career choice, but I've thought about it now for 3 years so I'm going to go for it!!

  • Well, I'm planning on taking classes I need to take to apply for the nursing school this summer (which means taking a semester off for me).  However, I only work part time as it is and plan to continue to do so as long as I possibly can.  I do have people lined up to watch my LO already so that helps immensely.  I just hope I can handle it when the time comes.

  • I'm currently in my last semester with finals next week. I also work part-time, but after the baby is born plan on staying home full-time for a year, then going back to school for a one-year program for my credential.

I am 34 weeks along, and did not think being pregnant while going to school was that bad at all. I imagine it will be a lot more stressful once I have the baby, just because I will have to line up day care and make time while I'm at home to study- THAT is the most challenging part for me, because it is hard to concentrate on homework when you have other things going on. Even so, I really think that if you can make it work, and have a support system around you- then do it!  You don't want to wait 5 years and then feel like you wasted all that time. Even if you had to go part-time for a while, it's better than not starting at all.

  • It all depends how well you do with time management.  I work full time,  have a 2 year old, am about to have my second, and am doing a second masters online.  If you are the kind of person who gets overwhelmed easily, then I'd say no.
