On Monday evening, at 40w5d I began to have some contractions about 10 minutes apart but nothing too strong. I decided to go to bed, figuring it was false labor and sleep would help distract me. I slept well until about 3:30 when the contractions returned. Although I couldn?t sleep anymore, I rested and dozed lightly in bed until 5am. At point, contractions were about 7min apart but very manageable so I drank my coffee and watched tv. They were more consistent by 7am so my mother in law came down to be with my older daughter and I hung out in the shower for a while, emptied the dishwasher, changed the sheets on the bed, and got very task-focused. My husband returned home from work and was asking me to call the doctor but I felt like I was still in early labor?although I had to stop, focus, and really breathe through contractions I felt very much in control so I figured it was still early labor.
At 9:30 I called the doctor?s office since I had already had a non-stress test scheduled (as of Monday afternoon I left work telling everyone I would be back from this appointment with an induction date, NEVER thought I?d actually go into labor at my own at that point). My husband and I drove the 30 mins to the doctor?s office, and had the test. At this point contractions were VERY hard to sit still though for the test (husband watched clock and said they were 2 min apart based on my actions), but manageable when I could do my thing. I don't think anybody in the office believed I was truly in labor because I was trying so hard to stay calm and not give in to the pain. The doctor came in, checked me, and I was 6cm and 100% effaced, straight admission to the hospital! We drove to the hospital, my husband flying on the highway and my telling him to slow down, no rush.
I walked into the hospital around 11:50, got changed, then started to have a really hard time getting into the bed for monitoring, IV, etc. Now it got intense. I finally got into a semi-comfortable position sitting up in bed, leaning over the tray table then my water broke at 12:30 while they were still trying to draw blood. I had incredible urge that something was happening, and I was told I was ready to push. The doctor came, threw the gown on and I was pushing before ever actually seeing his face. I just stared at the ceiling while pushing and felt like I couldn?t let go of the bed rails. Once I finally was able to listen to the nurses and hold my legs, I had 2-3 more pushes and felt my baby come out. Instant relief once she was out and such a rush of emotion and adrenaline from such a fast birth.
Lyla Eve was 7lbs, 10oz and 20 inches long, born at 12:37, just over 40 minutes after walking into the hospital. She is beautiful and I couldn?t have imagined a more perfect birth (although my husband would have preferred being at the hospital long before!) I feel really empowered by having a natural birth and do think practicing hypnobirthing helped a lot, but the speed certainly played a part as well!
Re: Long natural birth story--Nov turned Dec mom
WOW!
That was awesome! You are one cool momma! Congratulations on that fantastic birth of your daughter and cutting it that close! I can see where hubby would like a little bit longer interval, time in the hospital for you though! I would say your timing was extremely good!
Thanks for that wonderful story and on the natural birth. Those are great when you are able to have birth naturally!
