2nd Trimester

has anyone been diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidrum?

my dr said this is what i have. as nothing is really staying down. I was in the ER for fluids today and I feel a little bit better, not hugely buts its a start. If you have had it or do have it, how far a long were you when you felt normal again?. I feel like I am a burden on my family. My DH has been amazing taking care of the house, our 4 yr old daughter, cooking and working his FT job. DH insists I am not a burden, buts thats how I am feeling b/c all I want to do is lay around. I have been off all week and go back to work on Monday, I am already dreading that.

Re: has anyone been diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidrum?

  • I was diagnosed early in my 1st trimester. I am a SAHM with a 2.5 year old. This disease has taken over my life.

I've been blogging my journey with HG (LIS). I just had my PICC line removed due to an allergic reaction but, I am finding that I have days where I can cope with the sickness. I'm well into my 21st week and still getting violently sick on some days. To date, I've lost almost 30 pounds.

::hugs:: I am so sorry you're dealing with HG. PM me if you ever need to talk!

  • Funny, I was lurking from July '12 and here's a post from a July '12 regular!

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this.  I had it with DS.  It started at 6 weeks and it was awful until about 22 weeks.  Even after that, I still puked a few times a week (but that was nothing, compared to the first 22 weeks).  I was in the ER twice for dehydration, and had a really hard time keeping down anything healthy.  I don't really have any advice that you haven't already heard.  I'm allergic to phenerghan (sp?) so zofran was my best friend.  (Though it didn't make it go away, just lessened it.)  Just take care of yourself as best as you can and try not to feel guilty about letting DH take over the household chores.  You're growing his child- it's not too much to ask him to do the dishes!

    Hang in there.  ((hugs))

  • I have it and am 17.5 weeks so far. I have good days and bad days. Zofran helps take the edge off but I still feel sick, I just don't get sick. I am also doing acupuncture although the verdict is still out if its helping. There are some days despite everything- I have to just stay in bed. I haven't lost weight, but I also have not gained any.  I don't think they really know why it happens, I am just trying to be optimistic that I'll wake up any day now and feel good. Hang in there!
  • Yes, unfortunately. I was horribly sick and nauseous 24/7 from 6 weeks through 19 weeks or so. I was on zofran the whole time and it did nothing for me... I probably should have just quit taking it... I had 5 rounds of iv treatment for dehydration, lost 24lbs and was put on medical bedrest for 5 weeks this past summer. We have 2 kids (3 1/2 and 4 1/2) and my husband did literally everything. He was exhausted, I was exhausted...it was not fun. But I it DID pass over and baby is healthy.

  • I had a severe case of it with my oldest son and with this baby. I was in the hospital both times for over a week. I had numerous IV's for weeks until they put a Picc line in my vein to feed me that way. Luckily, I am feeling much better, but it is a tough thing to endure.

  • I was diagnosed with this as well.  Had to have IV Fluids, and stay off my feet a lot.  It started around 6.5 weeks and did not let up until 16 weeks.  I feel a ton better now, but have the occasional vomiting spell, but NOTHING like it was.  It is HELL ON EARTH, and I am so sorry you are going through this!!!  You will survive I promise!!

  • And yes, PP's are right...do NOT feel guilty about resting and letting DH take care of things.  Our house went to sh*t, and we have a 4 year old son.  DH was stressed, I was stressed and I remember one day I had been violently ill and called my OB begging for help. I was crying on the phone, and the nurse was just so supportive and kind.  We have no family in the area, so it was all up to me and DH.  At one point I considered calling his mom (who still works but has flexibility) and asking her to come and stay with us from 1500 miles away so that DH could get a break because I just felt so helpless.  I took Zofran, but it really did not help, maybe just took the edge off. I still puked.  I tried another med, I can't remember the name right now...but, it literally KNOCKED ME OUT and I just could not handle the way it made me feel.  It was definitely a roller coaster ride for the first 16 weeks, and it seems like mine let up a little bit before the other gals.  I still have some spells, and I take the Zofran as needed.

  • I have it as well, I did not have it with my son.  I've been hospitalized a couple of times for the hyperemesis itself as well as once for the kidney stones that were a result of being so dehydrated. I am just now starting to feel better, I know that I am one of the lucky ones where it ends early, with my son I had horrible, horrible morning sickness that lasted until 20 weeks and I was afraid it was going to be the same with the hyperemesis this time.  Zofran wasn't an option for me as I'm still BFing my first and it gave me horrible headaches.  Hang in there, let your husband take care of you and don't feel like a burden.  Also, see if you can go on short-term disability if it's an option.  If it's already diagnosed as hyperemesis it should be a relatively straight-forward process.

  • I have it and I feel like it's getting better (finally!). It's been 12 weeks! My only advice is to let other people take responsibility. You have a legitimate excuse. The worst part for me was having my boss not think it was a real problem. She yelled at me for taking time off of work and she decided not to hire me for the next school year (I lived in a different country without the nice laws we have in the US). All I can say is try as hard as you possibly can to keep at least some fluids down. I had a horrible experience with an IV line for fluids. Hyperemesis can be scary, but lots of women have it and have perfectly healthy babies. Just listen to what your doctor says and don't overdo it and you'll be fine!

  • I had this from week 5 to 12. I was admitted for iv fluids week 11 and started to feel better after week 12. The nurse told me that If I didn't' keep up the level of fluids that my hormone levels would drop, increasing the nausea. So all in all witht he zofran, I have to drink 24/7 as much as I can. It sucks and I'm not a big drinker but if it keeps the nausea away, I will do anything

  • I've had it with both my pregnancies and it is really hard.  I recommend the website www.helpher.org for help dealing with this disease.  There's a lot of wonderful information on there on treatment options and how to live with HG on a daily basis, and the message boards are filled with incredible, strong, supportive women who've been through HG themselves.

  • Hi,

This is my second pregnancy with HG. My first pregnancy ended at 18 weeks and so early my DS did not make it. I had pre-rupture membranes and incomptatence cervix....I had HG with my first pregnancy and was hospitalized for 2 weeks and strict bedrest up until my water broke at 18 weeks.

Now with my second pregnancy I found a doctor who specializes in HG. HG is a very serious condition and it takes a special doctor to understand what we go through. My first preggo I used zofran unfortunately this pregnancy it wasn't working. I was hospitalzed again for 2 weeks already. With my high risk from the first pregnancy from PROM and IC .... my doctor decided to do a picc line. its like a temp perm. iv in your arm. I run fluids with phenergan ... I recently had a cerclage put in also for the IC.

But, I dont know how serious your HG is, I had lost 23 pounds in 20 days and couldnt keep anythign down. My days were filled with vommiting bile all day, literally.....IF it is this bad or gets that bad...i really reccondmend a picc line. I wish I would have done it last time. The thought is scary. Trust me im the biggest baby in the world. This picc line has saved my life and the only pain was afterward...and its not pain...its just your arm is sore...It feelsl ike you worked out really hard and how your sore the next day...but i'm here if you have any questions....

I really hope your HG gets better!

  • Lurking from third trimester but wanted to help.

I was diagnosed with HG and it didn't start easing until I was about 20 weeks along.  I'm down to vomiting about twice a week now, which is heaven compared to before.  I lost 30 pounds and went to the hospital twice a week for IV fluids.  I also had a one week in-patient stay for stabilization.  However, even now, if I exert myself too much, like try to vacuum the whole house, or shop for groceries for more than an hour or so, I will be sick and vomiting that night and the next day until I get enough rest and rehydrate.  I had to stop working at 7 weeks and haven't been back.  I'm lucky; my employer understands and is holding a position for me.  I may be holding more food and water down, but I'm still not myself.  I can't keep up with the smallest household chores, I'm dizzy and nauseous a lot, and I pass out unexpectedly.  Not the happy pregnancy I was hoping for.

Here is what helps me with the worst of it.  I took Zofran, which has been mentioned a lot, but it only took the edge off.  I also took Reglan, which helps gastric emptying.  My digestive system basically slowed to a stop and anything I ate or drank would just sit in my stomach, never moving.  The Reglan helped move food and water quickly from my stomach to my small intestine.  Many people complain of side effects from Reglan, but I never had any.  I am now off Zofran and Reglan, but I still take my real lifesaver, Nexium.  With the shutdown of the digestive system, your stomach will react by making a TON of stomach acid, causing reflux and more nausea and vomiting.  Forget Tums, or Maalox, and go for the big guns.  If I forget to take my Nexium in the morning, I will be back to constant vomiting by early evening.

Good luck to all of you, and healthy babies for all of us.
