Thoughts on how to spell Ryan (for a girl)??

We are naming our daughter Harper Ryan but wanted to put a feminine twist on the spelling of Ryan.  I liked Ryanne but am afraid people are going to pronounce it Ry-Anne...it's already happened.  Any suggestions?

  • If i saw it Ryanne, I would think it was Ry-Anne. I have seen the name spelled Ryin for a girl.

  • I like it as just Ryan.

  • I am not sure how else you can spell it to make it "girly."  Maybe Rian?  It's tough.  I went to school with a Ryanne and it was pronounced like Ryan.  Once we all knew how to say it, no one made the mistake again.  I like the name Harper...cute!!!
  • I like it spelled the original way...Ryan. People will def pronounce the other spelling incorrectly. We know a little girl named Ryan...it is spelled the original way.

    Ps...love the name Harper!

  • A good friend of mine growing up spelled her's Ryann. I think it has just the right feminine touch.

  • I work with 2 girls named Rian.

  • I know a girl who spells her name Rian.

  • I have a friend who named her daughter Ryan and she spelled it the normal way. My vote is for Ryan, but I'm one of those who thinks extra letters aren't necessary.

  • I would think Rian.  However keep in mind that most people are never going to use her middle name so confusing the masses with a pronunciation is just not going to happen.

  • I like it Ryan, Ryann and Rian. It's also her middle name so no matter how you spell it, typically not many people will be using her middle name except family and you'd hope they'd know how to pronounce it!
  • If we have a girl this is our top name choice and we're planning to spell it Ryan.  I like the Ryann spelling too but I worry people will still pronounce it Ry-Anne.  We plan to use a very feminine middle name with it.  Btw, I LOVE Harper!!!  So cute and unique but not in a "weird, trying-to-be-unique" sort of way.
  • Since it's the middle name, I think you should just stick with Ryan. That way people are guaranteed for the most part to pronounce it correctly.

If you do any other variation, I think ppl will be more likely to pronounce it Ry-anne. Rian just looks odd to me, and then some ppl might try to say Ree-an? I dunno.

  • Ryan.

    Ryanne is pronounced Ry-anne.

If you want it pronounced Ryan, spell it Ryan.  I know two girls named Ryan.  Why the need to spell it differently?

  • Hi there,

My name is Riann (pronounced Ryan). My mother wanted to name me Ryan but with a feminine spelling. I'll tell ya, I definitely get it mispronounced as "Ree Ann" almost daily. However, I often get complimented on the unique spelling and enjoy that. It's definitely up to you to decide which is more important...a cool spelling or hearing it pronounced right! The upside if you chose "Rian" is that she may one day go by the same nickname as mine, "Ri", which always gets pronounced right :)

  • My niece is Ryann- I like the spelling.

  • Have you considered Rhiannon? It's pretty, with a nice meaning (from the old Celtic meaning "great queen"), and instantly recognizable as feminine. I think Harper Rhiannon is quite nice. Just my $.02, congrats on your baby.Big Smile
  • I have a friend who spells hers Riane.  I've never seen anyone mess it up.
