peanut butter

is everyone giving their LOs peanut butter?  our pedi now recommends waiting until 2yo.  however, we have no food allergies in our family, and aside from milk/cheese/yogurt, DD isn't big on protein.  thinking about trying some peanut butter.

Re: peanut butter

  • Micah gets a peanut butter and jelly sandwich at least once a week.

  • We are a food-alergy free family, so we gave PB at a really young age. (maybe 10mos or so?)  We started out with just nibbles of my PB&J sammies, but now he eats it on toast or crackers or his own PBJ sandwhiches.  Just take it slow if you're worried- it will probably show up immediately if he's got an alergy.  I keep childrens benedryl at home just in case.

Ds also had problems eating meats!  He's just now coming along and will eat 10-15 bites of meat at dinner time.  Some ways I snuck in meat was putting leftover chicken or pork in a quesadilla or coating it in crushed crackers.  Oh, also Greek Yogurt has a good amount of protein too...

Some recipes that got Ds interested in meats were chicken pot pie, crockpot pork chops, jambolaya, meat balls- basically anything where the meat was coated with a sauce :)

  • I never intentionally gave it to him. But I'm pretty sure he won't have a reaction. He's found an almond on the floor and ate a tiny piece of candy containing nuts once. Nothing happened.

  • DCP gave it to LO last week... I was less than thrilled about that. But, I guess that means she's not allergic to it. Still not giving it to her regularly though.

  • We tried it right after his 12 month visit.  Up until a month ago he loved his PB&J sandwiches.  We have no food allergies in the family and he wasn't allergic to anything else so we weren't too concerned about letting him try it.  Plus, our doctor told us the only thing to hold off on until 2 is honey.

  • The only thing we are holding off on is shell fish, (my mom is allergic).

Both mine love peanut butter on anything, even just a spoon. If you are concerned you can always try another nut spread, like an almond butter etc. Trader Joes has a great almond flax seed butter.

  • The AAP no longer recommends delaying peanut butter due to allergy concerns unless you have a reason (family history or something) to suspect an allergy.  They basically started to think it was delaying such foods that was contributing to the rise in allergies.

This is what our physician said as well. I started giving them PB around 10-11 months. They have it multiple times/week and we have never had an issue.

Same goes for egg whites. They've been eating whole scrambled eggs since 7-8 months.

  • We started around 11 months.  Here is what the AAP has to say about it:

  • We are peanut-free because of DS's allergy, although we have no other people in our families with allergies.  Just keep in mind that it often takes a couple of exposures for a reaction, and the older the child, the more likely they are to be able to tell you the beginning signs of a reaction (tingling in mouth, throat, etc).

  • My DD hates PB.  At first I though maybe she was having an allergic reaction and it hurt to eat it...  nope, it's a texture thing.  She hates sticky things.

  • I introduced it at a year and she had a mild reaction the third time. She does fine with almond butter though.
  • Started giving PB at a year, never had an issue.  LO eats it every once in a awhile, but not on a regular basis.

  • We tried it about a month ago and he's not a fan.  He hates when it gets stuck to his fingers and then flings it all over the place.  I've tried PB&J, PB sandwich, PB toast, and PB crackers.  No luck.  I was really hoping he'd eat it since he isn't eating a lot of meat right now.

  • He has PB&J like every other day. I don't know what I did before it. We started after a year. I had some children's benedryl on hand just in case. But we had no family history of allergies either.

  • I started giving my LO peanut butter around 12 months or so.  He loves it and no reaction with it.  I do still avoid giving him other nuts though.
  • We are an allergy-free family on both sides, and we cannot get DD to eat meat so we asked our doc at her 12 month and he gave us the green light. She now has a piece of PB toast almost every day for lunch. She loves it, and bonus- it takes forever for her to eat, so DH can do the dishes or vacuum while she has lunch!

This.  Except sometimes twice a week.  And he can eat an entire PB&J sandwich, crust and all.

  • Yes, DS loves it. We started it around a year (pedi gave us the okay at 9 months, I just waited to introduce it more because of the stickiness factor).
  • Yup, they both eat it.  They like peanuts even better than peanut butter.  There isn't anything I won't give them at this point.

I'm a little confused about those saying that their kids ate it 30 times and then had a reaction.  I've never heard of that before...

  • My pedi gave the green light to all foods (except honey) at the nine month check up. Her only warning was peanut butter. She also agrees with the newest research, but she would rather error on the cautious side since reactions to nuts can be much more intense and serious than other allergies. She would rather have that happen to an 18 month old than a 9 month old, and I completely agree.

  • Our pedi said 2 also, but I gave it to her at 13 months. We don't have any allergies in the family either. She LOVES it.

  • I started it at 10 months with my 1st and 11 months with my 2nd.

  • We waited until she was 2.  We took peanut butter crackers with us to her 2 year wellness visit and she tried them at the doctor's office.  I figured if she had a reaction her first time, at least they could help her.

I realize sometimes you can have allergy and have it not show up the very first time.  It was mostly me being paranoid!

All of this but especially the bolded!  We gave DS pesto many times before he had his allergic reaction (because of the pinenuts!)

    And now he's highly allergic.

  • We tried it when he was 12 months. Our pedi was ok with that. More recent studies show that waiting until age 2 is more necessary for kids with potential allergies.

  • we started giving peanut butter at a year. ds loves it and eats it almost daily.

  • Neither of our families have any history of food allergies so we didn't delay any foods. (Other than honey.)
