Punched in the stomach

Yep. That's what happened. I had a combative patient. She was talking to me, smiling and just fine and then she punched me in the stomach. Out of instinct when she jerked up I jumped back so she didn't hit me very hard but she damn sure tried. I told her 1. Hitting staff will put you in the psych unit real quick 2. I am pregnant her response to my pregnancy. " I'll hit you again if any of you come near me"

Then one of my cna's had a seizure and busted her head on the way to the floor.

Its been an excellent morning. Makes me very happy to be working 3 12s this weekend.

Im hoping y'all are having a much better day than I am. Is it a full moon???

Re: Punched in the stomach

  • Oh lord...thats when you call the doctor and get some Geodon....love that stuff. Haldol never works on my older patients. I have been hit, kicked, punched, spit on...everything. Thankfully none of this while being pregnant.

Thankfully the night shift nurses try to give me a great patient assignment.

    FYI...Tonight is a full moon!

  • She got a Xanax & a hydrocodone. I didn't even bother with the Haldol. She's sleeping now. ;) but she tries that again and I'm sending her for a psych eval. I'm NOT in the mood for this. She's not very old either. Grrrrr....

  • Trust me. I feel your pain.

What kind of unit do you work on?

  • I actually work in the acute unit of a retirement community. I have 32 patients. Most are hospice, a lot are in between major surgeries and have several on isolation. If they get better we send them to the nursing home or back to their apartments. It's basically an extension of the hospital for the very wealthy. (I live in a major retirement community)  This place is resort living for the retired ($350,000 minimum buy in), then apartments, to assisted living, then nursing home, then eventually to us to pass. We get lots of goodies here, chest tubes, tube feeders, wound vacs, etc etc etc. I've learned so much here but will eventually like to go to the new heart center at our hospital but plan to stay here for a while and get some more schooling in.

    Where do you work??

  • That's awful. I work on a psych unit and worry about this a lot.

  • I got kicked in the stomach a few days ago by a schizophrenic patient. But I didn't go to the doctor or anything, since I haven't felt any different. Plus DS kicks me so much harder when he's getting a diaper change.

And I'm thinking it's getting close to a full moon. Or at least it feels like it.

  • Ohhh my.  It for sure is full moon.  I work geriatircs and it always feels like full moon, but is now.  Hope everyone is ok.  Sounds like an awful day.
