Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

19 month old not *really* speaking

I'm not worried, just frustrated. Because she is, too. She has said words here and there, in English and Czech...we are raising her bilingually and are in Czech Republic right now and she's said 3 Czech words since we've been here, but everything she says, no matter what language, is only said for a day or two, then she stops.

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this, or has in the past and then their child started talking soon after?

Re: 19 month old not *really* speaking

  • DS will be 19 months tomorrow and he still doesn't really talk. He can say a few words, and he'll say a word but never say it again. He also gets frustrated when he is wanting something but can't figure out how to tell me.

His pedi isn't/wasn't too worried about it and said to give it another 4-6 months, and if he still wasn't talking then he would consider DS seeing speech therapy. But right now he says he's a perfectly normal little boy.

  • This is exactly us. She has about 7 words but she will start saying them and then out of nowhere stop completely. I think language development is partially hereditary. My mom is an SLP and she said that it has to do with how the mouth/tongue formed. My DH and I both did not really talk until around 2, and when I did start talking it was in full sentences. My mom said I just skipped words. I am not worried, and neither is our Pedi, but I know how you feel. I can tell DD will be soo much happier when she can communicate more effectively with us.

  • One of my best friends has a son that didn't start talking until he was almost three. His pedi said it was normal as long as they are still making an effort and attempt at words.

  • DS didn't have his "language boom" until about 20-21months. At 19 months I'm pretty sure he only said like 10 words. Now he's 22 months and will repeat everything, and has really started to use words more communicativly..

  • Okay, thanks guys. All of DD's friends (who are a couple months older) are speaking sentences, counting, singing...! And when I look at blogs of people with kids DD's age they, TOO, are talking. Aaaaak! Glad to hear these similar stories. Just makes me feel better. :-)

  • Ive heard its common for kids being raised bilingual to speak later.

If shes saying words then losing them, I'd call the pedi just to be on the safe side and see what their recommendation is.
