Food Allergy

eosinophilic esophagitis / elimination diets / latex allergy

I've been lurking for ages and decided to post tonight in hopes maybe one of y'all might have some advice. I'm hoping to start TTC in later 2012, dependent on a few factors-- getting my EE under control being one.

Any advice / war stories about EE and / or elimination diets? I am planning to cut out the rest of the top 8 minus dairy (my favorite food is sour cream and I need a little normalcy for a bit; plus I'm allergic to nuts so I already avoid them).

Latex allergy: this site (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders/latex_allergy/hic_latex_allergy.aspx) says that there's a whole host of foods which mimic / are related to latex reactions... has anyone had any experience with this?

Also---passing allergies on to baby... am I crazy for worrying about this? Not because I don't have kids yet but just in general. :)

Re: eosinophilic esophagitis / elimination diets / latex allergy

  • I know that there are some fruits that are related to a latex allergy (like bananas).  I think there are some moms here that are dealing with it (since this is where i learned about that)

regarding passing allergies to a baby... i think the chances are a slight higher for your child to have allergies if you or your SO has allergies.  My doc said that there is also a chance for a child to either have Food allergies / Asthma / seasonal allergies if you or your SO has one of those.. SO if you have seasonal allergies, your child can have food allergies or any of the three.

No one on my DH's or my family has food allergies and my son has 5 (outgrew one).  My neighbor has celiac disease (wheat allergy) and her daughter does not. My DH's friend has no known allergies and her son was diagnosed with celiac last year.

I don't know much about EE though so i hope you get some answers on that.  But i would perhaps look at your diet and eliminate GMO foods and limit meat and even avoid dairy.

    good luck!

  • You definitely have a higher chance of having an allergic child if you or SO have allergies. For example, I am allergic to bananas, seasonal things, animals, dust, hay, grass, trees, etc and i had weird eczema as a kid and am just overall not healthy. My oldest is allergic to dairy, eggs and peanuts and also has Mastocytosis, and is also sensitive to berries, juices, seeds, corn, etc. Not sure about the little one yet, but his eczema is worse than big brothers has ever been.

  • My husband and son both have EE.  It is hereditary.  It is more common in males.  Because you have it, it isn't a for sure that your child will have it, but you do have a higher chance.

I would just try to figure out your trigger foods and stay away from them.  Being pregnant is hard enough on your body, you don't want to add any other stressors on it.  Good luck.  You can also check out www.apfed.org for more information.  APFED is the American partnership for eospinophilic disorders.  Good luck!
