Could use some advice...

Hi,

My twins are "supposed" to start Kinder next year. I've already decided to hold them back because their younger sister is affected by the new cut-off date in our state (she is a year younger), they have speech/articulation issues, etc.

 We have a nanny who we are really close to and we like very much.  However, I want to put all three of them in Preschool 4 days a week.  We are not paying our Nanny a lot, but with all three in Preschool, it is going to drain us financially.   The preschool teacher they would have is excellent, they are doing great right now, etc.

  I am a teacher, and my school district is offering Transitional Kindergarten next year. My twins would be able to attend because of their 9/5 birthdays.  I work about 25 miles from my home, and it is about a 40 minute commute in the morning/afternoon.  It would be full-day.  My kids are used to waking up around 8:30a.m.-and if they went to work with me, they would have to be up by at least 6:15. 

 Would you even contemplate bringing them to work with you?  It would be free-essentially eliminating about $3000 worth of preschool costs.  But the long commute thing makes me nervous.  Do you think it would be too rough on them? 

Also, I plan on bringing them back to school the district where we live.  So for Transitional Kinder they would be attending all day (8:05-2:20), but  then they would go to a 9:40-1:40 schedule when attending regular Kinder.  Would that be a deal breaker for you?

    Would they be able to get their speech therapy during the school day if you sent them to your school instead of the school in the district you reside?  Where I live speech is free in your own district so that is why I am asking.    My nephew is currently in a preK program and my SIL is very happy she decided to put him in it.  They prepare the children for  Kindergarten much more than a preschool would.  My nephew also gets pulled from his class one day a week for a 1/2 hour and he gets his speech therapy.

    We really stressed a lot over a somewhat similar situation a couple of years ago when my kids were 3y. Our nanny (that we'd had since my twins were 3m) unexpectedly left and we waffled about going from being home to being in PK from 7:30a-5:30p since it was such a dramatic shift in schedules. To our amazement, they LOVED it and really did thrive. The shift in schedule wasn't an issue (and we also commute about 30-40m to/from school - the kids listen to books on CD, talk, nap, play with their Explorers (only allowed in the car), etc.)

    We switched PKs after PK3 and they adjusted fine (was still the same length in day, but new school.) 

    I agree with PP that the primary concern would be getting therapy.
