3rd Trimester

Stomach sleeping?

I'm sorta of a stomach sleeper...one leg crooked keeping a hip semi up, opposite arm angled under pillow.  Once I became pregnant, I heard sleeping on the left side was optimum for the kidneys and just went with it.  It's been a difficult process, but with enough pillows I've kept off my stomach.

Until just recently...I can't get comfortable sleeping in any direction (the back is just the worst, laying on my right side is more comfortable, and the left side is not comfortable at all).  I've lately woken up sleeping flat on my stomach...having pulled or kicked all the pillows out.  It is not super comfortable getting out of that position, but my body seemingly wants to be in the position.

I'm huge, so I know I'm cramping the baby something awful when sleeping like that.  Any one else finding themselves sleeping stomach side straight down?  I didn't think I could do such a thing at this stage in the game (less than 30 days to go).

Re: Stomach sleeping?

  • .Yea i have that problem, and ive tired to break it but when i fall asleep i just wake up like that. And i move myself and try to sleep on my side again but i wake up flat on it. Doc told me that it doesnt really hurt my LO, he said the sac pretty well protects her from all of that. What i am hurting is myself, im squishing my organs more. He said when i wake up just to re-position and try again. and not to beat yourself up over it. I still feel bad sometimes.

  • I sleep the exact same way that you described, and while I frequently cradle a body pillow a bit now since it hurts to have my huge belly pulling on itself from the weight, I still end up on my stomach often enough. My OB said that if I am ever in a position that would hurt the baby I would end up in pain myself. I remember one time last pregnancy when I somehow ended up asleep on my back (which never happens!) and my legs went completely numb and my body woke me up so I could change positions.
  • That's been happening to me a lot recently. I'm not really too surprised since I was also a stomach sleeper before becoming pregnant, but I had been doing so well sleeping on my side. Now, I fall asleep on my side at night, but when I wake up in the morning I am flat on my stomach. I'm sure the baby is fine, but I wish it wouldn't happen so often b/c I'm always uncomfortable when I wake up (not to mention I feel bad).

  • I'm definitely a stomach sleeper, but that hasn't happened to me (yet). So far I've woken up on my back a lot though just to re-position myself.

But when I saw your post my first reaction was "you can still do that??" haha. I guess it still works since I've read all the other posts too, but it's not like I'll try it lol. The human body is amazing!

  • From what I've been told, stomach sleeping doesn't really hurt the baby.  It just becomes a more uncomfortable position because the bump is in the way.  Anything physical like sleep positions that could potentially hurt the baby will hurt you first.  So I would say if you're comfortable sleeping on your stomach, don't be too hard on yourself to change that.
