gift suggestions (single male, 35) and a vent

A few years ago, we went to doing secret santa w/ DH's family. He has 6 siblings and it was crazy expensive trying to buy a gift for everyone. Now, we draw names and then get gifts for the kids. Price limit for adults is ~$40.

This year, every single sibling put down some kind of gift card; Amazon, Old Navy, Kohls, Target, etc. I was venting that the whole gift exchange is kind of pointless if it's just everyone going out and spending $40 on a gift card. Anyway...

My recipient  is my BIL. He's around 35, tech geeky, single. He requested a gift card from Kohls and I'll get him that, but I would love to have something for him to unwrap besides a gift card.

Ideas? I thought about an assortment of beers, but I *think* he has a gluten intolerance and a 6 pack of Red Bridge doesn't have the same charm as a 6 pack of microbrew.

  • I agree on the whole giftcard thing...it just isn't the same to me either.

If he likes beer, what about some cool beer mugs? Or what about a geeky shirt? I know my DH is super geek and all his 35-40 yo single friends all wear shirts with geeky sayings on them? Uncommon Goods also has some neat things that he might like.

  • Does he have an iPad? (I'm assuming yes, since you said tech geeky...) We're getting my brothers this. It's a little above the $40 budget, but maybe poking around in the apple store will give you some other ideas for fun iPad accessories?
    Dear Bump: You suck.

I will check out uncommon goods. I have to stay away from home items b/c he had to move in w/ his mom this year. It's been a rough year for him. His twin met and married a woman, so she and her daughter moved in and he was asked to move out. It's too expensive to live up there w/o a roommate, so he's back at home and sad.

He can use it to cut his gluten-free pizza.

Aaaaaaaand DH's stocking is officially stuffed.  Thanks Rosie!!

  • i think that giftcards are the lamest thing ever for a secret santa. last year, DH got to open one gift on christmas morning, a gift card to home depot. thanks a lot, FIL. now he can buy parts for when the toilet breaks. how exciting.

i would look on uncommon goods too or get him some kind of cool liquor set. i think the hottie is getting the husband a fancy set of flavored bitters for when he makes his nightcap.

Oh. My. Gaaaaahhhhhd. I want this.

  • DH suggested a subscription to Wired magazine, or Made (which is awesome).  You can buy a copy and wrap it up in a box all cute and fun.

    :-)
