You place the elf somewhere in the house, he watches over the kids and reports back to Santa. The elf is moved to various places in the house so it appears he has reported to the north pole and come back. I believe it is to encourage kids to be good leading up to Christmas.
My friend's EOAS is a bit mischievous and just yesterday spilled sugar on the table and did snow angels in the mess. The day before when they woke up, he was in Barbie's sports car. Her kids got such a kick out of it!!
The fun part is putting your own spin on your elf, naming it, etc.

I love this! I'm totally getting one for when DS is older!
You might want to check Chapters. There is a story book out about it. I think you can get the book and the elf in a combo. But I am sure you could fing an elf anywhere. Halmark or a local toy store.

The way I understand it... once you get the elf you have to name it, upon which Santa infuses the elf with magic to be his eyes and ears to watch over children. Kids can talk to the elf and the elf watches them to see whether they are good or bad, but they are not allowed to touch the elf or it loses it's magic. Each night the elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa. This is why they are located in a new place every day when the kids wake up. Also, the elves are mischevious and often can be found doing things like toilet papering the tree, spilling the sugar, changing all the pictures to pictures of him, etc.
So much fun! I can't wait until DS is old enough to start doing this!
They have them at Target now in a box set with the elf and the book. I had one in my 4 year old classroom a few years back and it was so fun! One day the elf turned all the books backwards on the shelf . . . a huge pet peeve of mine in the classroom and the kids thought it was soooo funny!

You talked me into it. So cute. My MIL works at a Hallmark and she can get them for 25% off! Score!

Curious is he up through out the whole year or only in Dec? Where did you get your elf?
