Re: PCP/TTC/ATP Wednesday

  • I'm waiting for CD1 of the cycle that will be at least three months prior to ttc. After losing 40lbs, my thyroid was functioning far better than my supplementation level (for hypothyrodism) and things are out of whack. My acupuncturist did a treatment to encourage it to start, but I won't be upset if it's not until after our get-away this weekend Wink

I won't chart while on my meditation course (end of Dec) and most likely not while I'm in D.C. (January) so that means I'll start charting in Feb and after a cycle or two we'll decide when to resume ttc. I won't be surprised if it's not until summer, but hopefully before July. At some point we may need to start thinking about the window of opportunity around my 2013 workload for completing my LC requirements and sitting for my board exam. I know better than to make ttc plans based on other life events, but I'd also not want to be due in June/July 2013.

QOTD: Growing up I ate pretty nutritiously overall (lots of fruits and veggies) from an early age until I was in school. I remember eating school lunches (which were better then than they are now, but still. (I know we had spaghetti and cheese bread and pizza regularly.) I also had lots of middle of the line snacks, not healthy but not completely junk food. When I was a tween/early teen, due to multiple factors we didn't eat very well. At 16 I became a vegetarian and seven years later, in my mid-twenties, began to eating meat again (after moving in with Christine). Now I'm questioning my food philosophy and what I want for our family/children. I've been doing lots of reading and reflection and I'm sure I'll make a decision that works for me and my body.

For our future children, I'm still not sure. I doubt C would ever give up meat herself, but I'm sure she'd be supportive of whatever I choose for our family as a unit since she's supportive of nearly everything I do Big Smile and I happen to do most of the cooking. I know for sure that we'll be keeping processed foods to a minimum, but I'm not sure about overall guidelines/rules or how that plays out for older children when they can decide for themselves.

  • Well, my big news this week is that TPR has been filed. So its time to buckle in for what may be a bumpy road ahead.  I really have no idea how BM is going to take it, but I have to allow myself some joy at the fact that we FINALLY HAVE MOVEMENT AFTER TWO FREAKING YEARS.  sorry about the shouting Embarrassed

In other news, we had Sprout's parent teacher conference today and it went well. It made me feel better about his report card.  Basically he is very bright and active and as she described him: "all boy".  Focus and distraction issues but he is kind and enthusiastic so I'd say a good report overall.  RB is doing well with the PTing (at what point do you go from "potty training" to "potty trained"?) and is otherwise having a good week.  Her language is surprising me every day and is helping her be more and more independent (as some of you saw on FB, last night she told me that she didnt want me to rock her to sleep and instead she was going to read a book - and then basically kicked me out of her room), wah.  Daisy is Daisy :)

QOTD:  Nutrition was not a priority growing up.  both my parents grew up very poor so canned meat/veggies and other processed foods were what they were used to.  They tried to open that up a bit for us, but my mom doesn't cook and there were still budget issues, so there was a LOT of processed food/fast food/just plain junk.  I'm trying really hard to push the envelope even further and, though their diet isnt perfect, move my kids towards a diet of fresh produce, organic meats, whole grains, and an appreciation for foods the way they come naturally from the earth.  Actually, when i look at it from a generational standpoint, it makes me feel better about the progress that has been made.

Wow, that is big news. I hope the process goes relatively smoothly, especially for Sprout (and you and A too).  Does BM still get visitation while the TPR is in process?

It is good the state is moving forward, and I am happy you guys could be on your way to being a forever family.

  • CT, I had a feeling that your news was about that! I'm sure the journey from here on out will unfold and be met with your amazing sense of grace. Thanks for sharing.

My own evolution in terms of nutrition as a child was very much tied to our families finances/abilities and the progress/change in perspective for me as an adult is directly related as well.

  • CT- That is big news...hopefully everything continues to move along.

TTC-  We went for pre-med monitoring yesterday.  DW is a little stressed because she is having to use so much time for monitoring appt. and was home sick today.  She calmed down when I pointed out that we need to keep our baby oven as healthy as possible and it will be ok.  We already decided that we are switching baby ovens after two more cycles.

I have my consultation with the RE next week so they can track my January cycle hoping for a try in February.  We are still keeping our finger crossed however that third time is the charm.

I know a couple people in here have had Gastric Bypass...have any of you TTC or had babies yet?  I curious about any extra medical attention that may be in my future.

QOTD: My mother is a terrible and very unhealthy cook.  If it didnt come out of a box, can, drive-thru, or a large slab of overly fatty meat we did not eat it.  My household now however is very different and my children will never eat at a fast food chain.  We are a low fat, lots of healthy proteins, whole grain kinda household.  DW have discussed it and we are considering heading towards using some more organic products but it is difficult to find organic reduced fat products.  We do agree that once we do have children we are leaning towards at least using organic milk products for them because the hormones and the way it can speed up puberty.

We had three BFN in the Fall of 2011. It is back on to some baby making come June. Swim little fellas, SWIM!!!!
  • Update: CD 28/7dpo/7,8,9 dpici.  Just waiting!  The night of 5dpo I felt...stuff... that made me think I'm pregnant.  And yes, I have POAS.  You know me.

AOTD: My mom tried to give us nutritional food, but she wasn't the best cook in the world.  My dad- forget about it.  He puts together a good salad, though! We always had fresh fruit, veggies, and "healthy" cereal in the house.  I feel pretty good about what I grew up with.  The biggest difference my family will have is that we will be vegetarian at home.  If kiddos get older and want to eat meat, that will be their choice. They can have it at their aunt and uncles down the street :)

  • PCP: We're just focusing on finishing up this chapter of our life and moving on to the next.  We made the decision to go to India for two weeks in January while we are both between jobs.  The intention is it's going to be our last big trip before TTC.  I figured if we're doing a trip, might as well be to a malaria endemic country!

We'll be moving into a short-term rental when we first get to Chicago, and once I find a job and we get settled into a long-term place would be when we would start TTC.  So I think we're still on track to start figuring out logistics/charting in March, and probably TTC by the summer. It's seeming more real every day, and I'm excited but also filled with trepidation. It's going to be such a big change in our lifestyle.

  • TPR!!!!  How exciting!  My thoughts are with you, and their bio mom.  I hope that your budding connection with her can help bring her some peace in this, and in turn make it easier on the kids and you and A.  And I hope your state can finish the next steps faster so that all of you can get the closure and permanency you deserve!!  All 6 of you have been in limbo far too long.

As for us, same as lately.  I went to the eye doctor today and said 'I'm hoping to get pregnant.' Little things make it feel more real when we're waiting.

QOTD: My mom is an awesome cook, we all love food, and there was a lot of cooking and/or buying good food = expression of love.  We ate home cooked food and fruits and vegetables, but too much fat and sugar and too large quantities.  I'm trying to be healthier as an adult, but often failing.  I'd really like to break this cycle for our future children, but I worry about my ability to be the role model I want to be.  I also generally have the philosophy that moderation is best - I won't say no fast food or all organic, and I don't think enjoying food is a bad thing, but I certainly think more whole foods, less processed crap, and less horomones and pesticides is better.

TTC with PCOS since July 2011.
    IVF Oct/Nov 2012

  • Oops, forgot QOTD.

AOTD: My mom was very much about raising me with "nutritional food".  I was shocked to find out in 7th grade that in most homes, sloppy joes are made with meat rather than tofu.  And my mom gave me organic juice mixed with club soda and called it "soda" for years.  However, things became much more lax as we grew older.  By the time I was in high school, Little Debbie cakes were a regular in our house.

I would like to be intentional in our philosophy about food with our children.  Certain things are very important to me, in particular eating "real" food. I don't want to feed my kid mac & cheese a few times a week, but I also don't want to be overly dogmatic about it.  It will be yet another exercise in balance and flexibility.

  • Very excited about this Scout/Rosebud/Daisy development. I hope that things go more smoothly than expected. Long time coming.

QOTD: Generally pretty healthy, always had veggies with dinner. The only two major differences I foresee are having (much) less sugar in the house, and having vegetarian dinners on a regular basis (at least 2x a week). My dad and Jen have similar philosophies about how if it doesn't include meat, it isn't really dinner. Fortunately, she is more flexible and sees the nutritional and financial benefits of incorporating vegetarian meals, even if she doesn't like it ;)

  • TTC: After last cycle's failed IUI, we moved on to IVF.  I have been very blessed so far - when I went in yesterday for the ER, they were able to retrieve 19 eggs!  I got the call this morning that 14 of them fertilized.  Here's hoping they continue to split and grow and I can have a successful transfer in 2-4 more days.

QOTD: Dinner was and still is a prominent part of my family growing up.  Every meal was balanced and surrounded with good conversation.  My wife and I feel the same way and intend to continue the tradition with our children.

  • We are at full capacity right now, no more kids for awhile unless Owl and Apple leave us.  We are hoping to adopt them but were reminded by our agency SW yesterday that if the girls are a match for a county family than they could very well go to them.  It sounds like the CSW's are trying to keep the girls with us, I hope that's how it works out.

A is doing well, she loves Owl and Apple and has been spending a lot of time playing with Iz.  She discovered Cootie Catchers last night and had a blast folding and playing with them.

Iz has been trying J lately, I can pretty much ignore the annoying little bahaviors now but it's getting on J's nerves.  She seems to be equalizing with J and I which is a big relief.

Owl is still getting used to us, she doesn't talk (not sure if she knows how) and she prefers to stand in the dining room and watch us in the living room.  She is learning how to eat with a spoon and fork and drink from a sippy cup.  She doesn't like to have her hands touched but likes to snuggle with me.  She doesn't play or attempt to follow the girls around.  I feel for her and hope to teach her how to be social and loving.

Apple is doing great!  Her arm is still in a sling but she doesn't seem to mind to much.  I took her in for xrays this morning and we have ortho and peds appts tomorrow.  She is getting used to our home and I think she is getting her days and nights straight, she is more awake during the day and only wakes 2-3 times a night.

QOTD: I was raised on Shake N Baked pork chops and chicken, whole fruits and vegetables, and we ate out at a sitdown restaurant about once a week.  My Dad never really explained that fast food was bad (did people know back then?).

I think we eat differently than I did as a kid, J and I emphasize fruits and veggies, our kids love tofu and although we eat out, it's not once a week.  I believe in eating more whole foods and explain the dangers of fast food to my kids.

  • ATP: Life is pretty average in our house. The kids are so excited about Christmas and the Elf on the Shelf that is makes it fun. I need to take them shopping for L's gift this weekend. We'll see if they can keep a secret (I doubt it!)

My parents were pretty middle of the road. There was a lot of Lean Cuisines as meals (although accompanied by a salad) and lots of grilling. My mother wasn't a great cook and my grandparents lived nearby so they did a lot of cooking for us - though it was a lot of casserole type things. My parents also had a lot of snack foods in our house growing up.

We don't do a great job with our kids...mostly due to convenience and time constraints. On an average school night we aren't getting home till 6:15 with 2 tired kids who are hungry and tired and still have homework to do and get in bed by 8 - which makes getting even a 30m meal put together challenging.  Carter is so freaking picky that it makes dinner fairly limited for him (and yes, we make him take 3 no thank you bites...which are tortuous for everyone.)  We do better in the summer when we can grill (fast and easy clean up) but winter is hard since L doesn't like most crock pot recipes due to health reasons. We do pack the kids morning snack and lunch everyday and do a decent job of getting in a balanced meal.

  • CT:  YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was hoping that's what it was!

ATP: Gwen was dry after nap yesterday, so they asked if she wanted to sit on the potty; she did, and she peed there! Wowza, ready or not, here we go with potty training. At 21 months. Sheesh!

Otherwise, she's good. Already displaying some typical 2 year old behavior, but also so sweet and loving.

QOTD: My parents were vegan for a bit when I was a baby, but starting eating meat again before I was very old (so I don't remember being vegan at all, though one of my favorite recipes is a leftover vegan one). After that it was just all about balance. Getting lots of good veggies and fruits, choosing lean meats and fish, and having treats be just that... occasional treats. We rarely ate fast food.

We are trying to do the same with Gwen. Trav is a big red meat guy, but we try to find a happy compromise and eat it only once a week, if that. Mostly its the lean meats, and I'm expanding his horizons when it comes to fish. Luckily he LOVES veggies and I love fruits, so we do well there.

We didn't eat fast food a lot before I asked him if we could do a fast food free month, which he agreed too. We did well with it, only caving once for pizza and once for hoagies... which I don't consider "typical" fast food anyway. Since then (about two months ago?), we've stuck with it and only had hoagies one other time and pizza one other time... and both were "emergencies."

Gwen doesn't get candy, and cookies/other baked yummies are rare treats.

  • I don't ever post on these but thought I would join in today. Our biggest news is that our little boy is finally here! He was born on 11/18/11 @ 8:52am. He weighed 7 lbs 12.6 oz and was 19.25 inches long. He's 2 weeks old now and just precious. These first 2 weeks have been exhausting, starting with the 39 hours of back labor that I had, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. We are so in love with this little guy!

  • congrats jenn&mel!

CT that's awesome! good luck! and Rosebud is PTing already!! wow!!

Status quo here. The girls are only eating at 10ish and 3ish overnight now so that's helping but I am still a little...i don't, annoyed? they're not STTN yet. I think a schedule during the day would help ,but I'm not home, etc. ugh.

QOTD: C's family ate much better and was much more active than mine. I have a LOT of poor food habits from my childhood and associated complexes. I hope to do better with the girls.

  • I love this question of the day b/c C and I grew up eating entirely differently. She has never had cow tongue, cow stomach, pig feet, pig ears, green chili pork skin tacos nor canned fruits and canned veggies. Her family ate...let's just say, a little different than mine (definitely a lot healthier). The only thing that I really want our kids to experience is the variation and exploration of foods that just seem (for lack of a better word) icky.

    C, your thoughts?

  • CT- what fantastic news!!! SO SO SO excited and happy for you all! I hope things move ahead smoothly.

Jennandmel- Congrats on your new baby boy! And I feel ya on the back labor...I had it for 3 non-progressing days with E!

ATP: Things are pretty good around our house. E's doing well with her reading and homework and for the most part is an easygoing kid.

QOTD: I think my parents used more canned/processed items than I will ever use. I am very keen on fresh veggies and salads for dinner and fortunately E is pretty good about eating most of them. She does like her ranch dressing, but at least there are veggies attached to it! I don't think we eat nearly as much meat as we did as kids. E also likes fish (even salmon!) so we try to eat that when we can get it fresh. She drinks organic milk and I have switched some of our produce to organic. We don't have easy access to the stores I'd like to shop at for organic stuff, but I'm making changes where I can.
