Do you cringe when you meet other kids with LO's name?

Re: Do you cringe when you meet other kids with LO's name?

  • No, I only know of one other little girl with the name Adeline and it doesn't bother me.  I would have picked a more unusual name otherwise.

I'd never met a soul that had my son's name.  Everyone gave us the "I've never heard that side eye" when we told them what we were naming him.  So I was super shocked when one of DH's friends named their son Asher.  It was even more surprising because he had been one of the side eyers and had told us how awful it was.  Guess it grew on him.

I have had a kid in every class for the last 5 years wilth the name of Asher.

  • There are two Bumpies (that I've seen so far) with sons who have the same name as DS, but I have yet to encounter another Bennett in person. I sort of hope he will be the only Bennett in his class because as a teacher I hate when I call a name and get a "Which One?" response because multiple children share the same name.

  • I wouldn't cringe, I don't think. I love the name Danica and picked it though bc 1. I loved it 2. It's not popular and 3. It's a real name. I want to say though that I would feel like those parents had good taste if I heard of another little Danica.

  • The only other kids I've met with DD's name have been 9 and 13, so that doesn't bother me.  I really don't expect to meet too many Leah's, as it's not super popular but I don't think it would bother me if there was another Leah her age around.

  • I don't cringe, but I want to say "Well they may be the same, but ours is cooler". DS's name is Jet (and that is with only one "T" by the way) and our last name is Black.... Yes, we named our child Jet Black. And he is awesome :-)

  • I don't know of any other baby named Dane (in real life).

Baby #2's name, however, is much much more common.  It's probably in the top 10.  Doesn't bother me, though.  We like the name.

  • Nope. We don't meet very many other Sophies. Most of the ones we do meet are Sophias, and go by their full names.

We've done plenty of class/team activities, and there haven't been any other Sophies on her teams or in her preschool class. I was a little surprised, because we knew it was a very popular name -- although Sophie (after DH's grandmother) is less so.

I heard another mom at a local store call her DD Elsa, which really surprised me -- it's not at all commonly used.

  • We've never met another baby named Robert, so I don't know if it would bother me.  What sort of bothered me, was the other day at the park when a parent asked his name and said, "oh, he must be named after someone.", as if it is old fashioned.  It being old fashioned is fine with me, it was just weird how they said it.  DS was named after my husband, and we love his name.  It suits him perfectly.

I would love to meet someone else with DD's name.  She doesn't have an unsusal name.  It's just not common.  My name is Genevieve and I loved (and still do) meeting others with my name.  It's not common at all and I enjoy meeting the other privileged few to share my name.

I know a Genevieve (she's nearly two now) and she's adorable!

I haven't met very many people with my name, but when I meet one (or see them on tv) I tend to try and see if they fit the characteristics that I have associated with my name. It's almost like I see if they're worthy of the name. It's stupid, but I do it without thinking about it now. I've yet to meet anyone with my daughter's name, but I know of a little girl at my friend's church. It's in the top 50, so I know she'll meet more than I have with my name, but I'm okay with that. It suits her and I love her name.

Hah.  My DS1 is Elliott.  We have yet to meet another, though.  I do agree as well that I hate that it's being used as a girl name..

We kind of regret not adding the last "T"! We have good taste.

I love the singer Elliott Smith and wanted to use his version of the name. My H knew this and thought it would be kind of lame to name our son after a singer who stabbed himself to death :/

That's funny.  I didn't find out until after we agreed on the name and the spelling that the reason why DH liked it so much was because his favorite race car driver is Bill Elliott.  I had to veto Martin (Mark Martin) for DS2!

Cause I do. Heard a Mommy calling another Elliot at the playground today. H and I are thinking of referring to him as "Wolfie" for good.

I know, it's inevitable that others will have our LO's names. From a teacher's perspective however, it really blows having 3 Williams in my pre-K 4 group. The only thing that separates them is their last name initial. If I were the parent of those boys I'd be kind of bummed.

Oh, and what makes me cringe even more is when I hear girls being referred to as Elliot. Eff scrubs for starting that trend.

    That is all.

ironically, elliot's mom thought she was being unique. she had to stand out from all the beckys, kwim?

I got this a few times right after Theo was born when I would tell people his full name. His middle name is Robert, btw. Cool It kind of made me think the same thing: that maybe it was very old fashioned. It didn't bother me much though.

I haven't met another Theo(dore) yet, but one of my friend's next door neighbors named their son Theodore a couple months after my DS was born. I am a little curious to know if she mentioned my DS's name to them and they decided they liked it because I hadn't ever known anyone else who named their child Theodore. Maybe they are calling him Ted or Teddy though. Either way, it doesn't bother me.

  • I cringe more so when I tell people Cameron's name and then 5 minutes later they realize that he is a boy. Yup. Didn't think about that one when we named him but we still love the name & not too many other babes (that I have found) are named Cameron. Damn you Cameron Diaz.

  • i have  not had this happen yet.  i think bc my names are a little  uncommon, it might be interesting to meet another one.  sawyer is starting to gain a little popularity, but still havent meant another one yet.

  • Whenever I hear of another LO with DS's name, I start to worry that it will skyrocket in popularity. But at the end of the day I can't do anything about it, and it's a great name, so that just means other people love it too. I agree with you, however, that Elliot is strictly a boy's name.

  • No it wouldn't bother me.  But my BFF has the same name as me.  And my college roomate had the same name as me.  And theres always been someone I work with the same name.  Its never annoyed me;.

I never thought of it as that popular.  But I guess it was in the top 25 for year I was born.

  • It bothers me a little bit. Only because I don't want him having the same name as others when he is in school. I never heard of anyone with his name until after we had him and then I heard it all the time and I got annoyed. I should have known though because it's a pretty common name. We spelled it a little differently though so it could be shortened to something else and I know some people don't like it but it was the only name DH and I could agree on and we both like it :)

  • Yules, I had no idea your son's name is Elliot.  I seriously thought it was Wolfie or maybe Wolfe.

I don't cringe over other Elizabeths because a) we don't call B by her full name and b) most of them go by different nicknames anyway.  There are three babies within my circle of friends named Elizabeth who were born within a year or two of B and they are called Elizabeth, Ellie, and Libby.

I would probably be excited if I came across another baby Betsy.  But if I started seeing Betsy's cropping up everywhere, I think I would get annoyed eventually.

  • It hasn't happened to me yet. But if/when it does happen, I'll probably think, "That's cool!" because it's not a common name at all.
    "To me, you are perfect."

  • Alistair is not in the top 1000 names in the US so, while we've hear of others and I've seen a couple on thebump, we've not personally met any others so its kind of a non-issue for us. If we lived on the other side of the pond, though, it'd be a different story.

And, apparently this is a UO on thebump but I like Elliott for girls as well as for boys.

I was too shocked that there were two in one restaurant to be bummed :)

Danica Patrick is a famous woman race car driver and she also models :)

And I also do not care is someone else has the same name as Kaitlyn.  There are several variations of her name.  It hasn't been popular really since the early 90s.  I assume there are other people in the world with her name.  I just didn't want her to have a name that 20 other people in her class would have.  Like my name.  I think I know over 20 Heather's my around my age!

  • I haven't had it happen yet. I know a lot of adults with the name Robert (or some variation), but I haven't met another child with that name. Most of the people that are named Robert go by Bobby, Robby, Bob, Rob.....anyway.

I do hate when I meet someone else with my name though, lol. I don't mind if someone has my name as their middle name, but when they go by Renee I get annoyed Embarrassed

I didn't read this before I posted. DS was also named after DH - I love the name Robert and it's the perfect name for him. He's actually Jonathan Robert, but goes by his middle name. I love family names.
  • I have yet to meet any other little girls with the same name as my two. Plenty of people tell me about relatives they know with their names, but they are typically older ladies (70's-90's). DD1's name was in the 200's and DD2's was in the 800's on the SSA list in 2010, so they aren't terribly common. We attempted to choose names that would be less likely to cause them to need to go by their last initial in school since DH and I both had super common names and it gets confusing being one of many. But I wouldn't be upset if we met kids with their name - just means someone else in the world has good taste ;)

  • I've heard of several other Claires, and it doesn't really bother me.  As someone with an extremely popular name, I know it's not a big deal for there to be one or two other Claires.  I made sure not to pick a super popular name so that my daughter wouldn't have the same name problems I had when growing up.  I *think* we've done a good job with picking a not-too-common name for DD2 (Alice Betsy), too.

    edited for teh grammarz.

  • Yup.

ETA: Well, actually idk because I don't really hear a lot of Julianas anywhere. My name was always unique growing up so I wanted J to have the same kind of unpopular name. It would probably bother me if a lot more Julianas sprung up.

  • Yes, because we called him Nevaeh Stick out tongue, I kid, I kid

We have yet to find another kid named Isaac. As popular as that name is in the states, it is not down here. I did see a mom with a newborn and had "Isaac" embroidered in a burp cloth, but I don't think that counts.

His middle name is Wolfgang. I heart DH for convincing me to go with it, because it looks like we may start calling him Wolfie for good.

And to the PP's - of course I don't expect him to be the only one with this name in our town. I didn't invent the name. We did pick a seemingly unpopular name and it just saddens me to hear it quite frequently lately.

The fact that Wolfgang isn't in the top 1000 for the past 11 years makes me feel better.
