Do you celebrate St. Nick's Day?

Can you tell me about it?  What you do, how you tell your kids about it, etc?

I never celebrated this as a child and am curious....

Re: Do you celebrate St. Nick's Day?

  • I didn't celebrate it as a child either but my German/Dutch H did.  Tonight the children will leave a boot or shoe in front of their bedroom door (or fireplace) and Santa/St. Nick will fill it with sweets.  I think this might be how the stocking tradition started.

The girls think it is cool.

We try to have Christmas traditions from all their heritages so we explained that this is a tradition celebrated in Germany and the Netherlands where some of Dad's great-grand/grandparents were born.

  • I havent heard much about it but the kids are doing it at school.  They are learning about the dutch and ds said he gets to put out the shoe he made at school today and see if there are treats in it tomorrow.  :)  He is super excited.

  • We went to Catholic schools growing up and are of German descent, so we've always celebrated it. We leave shoes or stockings out and get small treats and always some oranges in them. We've just told our kids the story of St. Nick and they hear about it at school as well.

I am 50% German and went to Catholic schools too.  I can't believe I don't know anyone personally who celebrates it...

That's funny! We live in a pretty heavily populated German area, maybe that's why? We always left a shoe at school and got a small piece of candy there and small treat at home.
  • I'm 100% German and never celebrated it growing up.  But DD goes to a Catholic school so we will be celbrating for the first time tomorrow.  I had to sneak a treat bag filled with candy for each child to the teacher this afternoon.  She'll put the bags in the kids' desks before school starts tomorrow.
  • Yes!  St. Nick grew up in a wealthy family.  When he was a child, his parents died, leaving their money to NIck.  One day he heard of a man who could no longer take care of his daughters.  Nick passed by their house and saw that one of the girls had left her shoes out to dry.  So he went over and filled her shoes with money.

The students at my school celebrate by putting their shoe in the hall and the junior high kids fill it with candy.

I celebrate at home (did it today because DH is OOT tomorrow).  Today we exchanged small gifts and read the story of St. Nick together.

We don't "do" Santa here, so DD will learn the story of St. Nick and how Santa is a character based off of him.

  • My DS' Montessori preschool did it last year and this year and I have no clue why.  They had the kids leave their shoe out and I guess they went to a different room when they were filled with Hershey kisses.  I find it super weird that a non-Christian school with tons of non-Christian kids would do it and I don't even think his main teacher is Christian but I could be wrong.  I don't really like that they do it but he got so excited this year and last year that I never asked them about it, I have to wonder what the non-Christian kids say about it b/c it is explained to them that Santa left it.
