WCM or Organic Soy?

DS#2 is on Organic Soy Formula.  I've tried giving him WCM in a sippy a few times, and he either doesn't drink it, or he has explosive diapers & gas later in the day.  He had major issues when we started formula at about 5months on regular lactose formula, which is why we put him on soy.

Should I stick with soy or try WCM again?  We'd love to get off formula soon

  • Have you tried Almond Milk?  LO cant have dairy and she loves Almond Milk.

  • Try Almond or Coconut.  You know that WCM causes issues.  I'd stay away from it for a while.

  • What does your pediatrician say?

It sounds like your DS could have a lactose intolerance, in which case a non-dairy alternative would be better for him, but I would still suggest asking your pedi first.

  • H was/is the same way but our Pedi says to try the wcm every six months because sometimes they can grow out of the allergy. I would just stick to the soy if thats whats working for him!! Good luck!!

  • I would go with coconut milk over soy, or hemp milk if you can find it. Both have a lot of the "good" fats.

Haven't talked to our pedi yet.  Our original pedi moved, so we were just given a new one, met her once.  Not sure I can "value" her opinion after just 1 meeting.  I need to find out when LO's next appt is so it can be discussed.

  • DD2 has been on soy formula since she was a couple of days old. I've just been mixing whole milk into her bottle for the last two weeks or so. I'm down to two ounces of formula, five ounces of milk. She didn't like it in the beginning, but she's drinking it fine now.

  • I wasn't big on the WCM but made the switch because of the good fat that is supposed to be needed.  Maybe you can wean him on it if you want him to have it? Do half and half...

  • I had to slowly introduce WCM to LO by mixing it into her formula. I started with a 25/75% mix for a couple weeks, then 50/50% for another couple weeks, 75/25%, and finally straight up WCM.

  • Have you done much research on soy?  I will not give it to my daughter, and I certainly wouldn't give it to a boy.  Soy milk contains high levels of phyto-estrogen, which are estrogen-like substances.  Some studies have shown that these substances can interfere with a child's development and even cause early puberty, thyroid problems, breast development in male children, or other difficulties.  There is still a lot lot of research to be done, but I don't think it is worth the risk when there are other dairy-free alternatives out there.  I would suggest coconut milk, but definitely talk to your pediatrician.  Good luck!
