I've been looking at the two Melissa and Doug kitchens and the Educo brand kitchen. Are there any other brands that are made with non toxic finishes and materials? We have a 69" wall area that I am planning to devote to the play kitchen and would like to get a little table and chairs also, that doesn't have to go up against the wall.
ill try to get links but if you have seen the kitchens above, which do you like? None of them seem just perfect. I saw the most gorgeous kitchen in the One Step Ahead catalog, I was so excited till I read the materials and saw that it has PVC and MDF in it
. It had a faux granite counter, cherry cabinets, and a breakfast bar with stools. I freaking hate that there are so few options out there if you are avoiding carcinogens, it feels just about impossible. Right up the with trying to eat healthy and then finding out that your organic food is packaged in bpa or some other questionable substance.

My mom got the above kitchen and fridge for my kids for Christmas. I'm really impressed with the craftsmanship and look of it!
In terms of play food, we got Melissa and Doug wooden food a few years ago, but if I had it to do again I would have purchased some off of etsy. I've also made felt food myself before and it's really easy.
We got this... https://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=retro+kitchen+kidkraft&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=6982101801637340215&sa=X&ei=0tzcTqWNLcyltwe20fztAQ&ved=0CIkBEPMCMAE
I'll probably let it set outside for a few days anyway, just to be safe.
We had a home-made cardboard box kitchen for quite some time, until somebody spilled juice and it became ruined. After that, we lucked out an found a PBK floor model for ridiculously cheap.
Ohdeedoh had an article about play kitchens the other day. They're usually on the greener side of things, so you may want to check the article out:

I agree the Melissa and Doug foods are nice, though we don't own any. We have a few sets of PBK foods and a few under the nile foods. I love that since these are fabric you can really wash them and they're all healthy foods. I don't want my girls "making/eating" plastic junk when they're playing, since we don't eat that the rest of the time. I've given the girls old canned veggies, empty containers of things like dish detergent/cartons, old containers from eggs, cookbooks, etc.
Our kitchen has been an amazing thing! Have fun!
We looked for a long time for a play kitchen like this for DS. We ended up getting something similar to this from a family member. We are giving it to DS for Christmas. It's a waldorf style. Very plain. They cost a FORTUNE brand new though.
It isn't cheap, but I love this play kitchen:

My mom found a PBK stove/sink/oven @ a consignment store for $40 w/ a bunch of pots & pans and bought it when DD was little, then for her 2nd Christmas she bought the coordinating fridge. It's wood and MDF, but at least w/ the 2nd hand one it was all done off-gassing?
Do you have an Ikea near you? They have a pretty nice kitchen and they are very anti-formeldehyde in their finishes, etc. Also they have great fabric food, ceramic dishes, etc.
