Babies: 3 - 6 Months

45 minute intruder

I hate this! With DS, it's anywhere between 30-45 minutes. I can put him down and know, within a 15 minute window, when he will start stirring and wake himself up.

Does this ever end? Do they grow out of this at some point? I'm hoping there will be a day where I can put him down and not tune in to the video monitor 30 minutes later waiting to go help him stay asleep or back to sleep.

Re: 45 minute intruder

  • Does he cry? If he is just awake he will most likely go back to sleep on his own. My DD used to do that and I put one of those mirrors on the side of her crib. She'd laugh and "talk" to herself in the mirror until she fell back asleep.

He cries. It starts as squirming, then fussing then crying (all within 3 minutes).

He can put himself to sleep for his naps but he can't put himself back to sleep after waking. He's definitely not ready to be awake either.

  • We have the same problem in this house.  All I have to say is I hope it changes soon.

Here here!! This is us to a T... supposedly they grow out of it... well of course they have to at some point, at least by the time they are in school lol. My friend's DD grew out of it around 3.5-4 months so I was hopeful, but alas, we are still going strong!

So do you put your DS back down or is the nap usually over then?

  • Our son did this at night...EVERY night for 2 months...ugh.  Everyone said he was overtired or overstimulated before bed, but he never did it for naps and we tried everything to kick it.  At almost 4 months, it suddenly stopped.  He still takes occasional naps that are only 45 minutes, but he has at least 2 a day that are 1-2 hours in length.  And for 10 days straight, he's made it 4 hours to his first feeding (no 45 minute intruder there!)

I hope it stays away, I hated that bastard!

  • My son has only ever taken 30-40 minute naps. Randomly he'll take a 2 hr nap but that probably happens twice a month. He sleeps well at night so the pedi says it's a tradeoff.

  • We dealt with the 45 minute intruder from 2-4 months with random longer naps. At 4 months we started with only getting 30 minute naps every.single.time. I used to curse the 45 minute intruder and now would love to get at least 45 minutes naps in.

So is this just a phase?? DD took GREAT naps during the day up until this week.  Usually 4 naps a day, at least 1 hour with one always being over 2.  This week I'm lucky to get to 45 minutes.  No fun!

  • My LO has just started getting past this window within the last week.  His naps are finally getting longer and he has now slept quietly at bedtime until he gets up 5-6 hrs later to nurse.  Working to get him back to sleep at naptime never worked for me and I gave up trying.  At bedtime, I'd just have to put the paci back in and he'd go back to sleep easily.

This - we still have these and DD takes 4-6 per day.  It is a lot of napping and getting her to nap but less stressful that trying to get her to sleep longer.  Pedi says she will likely grow out of it in next couple months.

It depends... sometimes he seems happy enough, so I get him up, if he still seems sleepy or if I think I have half a chance (i.e. he is not kicking his legs like crazy or going nuts) then I try to put him back down. I usually don't have much luck - sometimes I get 10 more minutes, sometimes I get 1/2 hour more. But usually we have 5 - 45 minute naps a day.

Same story. DD goes down by herself, but we use her nuk to help her get past the 45 minute intruder. I read somewhere that at this age babies are often not capable of getting themselves back to sleep very well without some help. I'm okay with it, as DD is able to get herself to sleep initially. We rarely have this problem at night, only naptimes. I always try to get longer naps out of her (by putting in her nuk) but if she's still awake after about 15-20 minutes, I consider naptime to be over and get her up.
