Thoughts on Tribble?

DH threw "Tribble" out the other night as a suggestion after watching the show Sweet Home Alabama.  The lead's name is Tribble Reese.  DS #1 is Collin.  The top boy name for the twins is Griffin and we need a 2nd boy name.  At first I vetoed Tribble.  The more DH says it, the more open I am.  I looked at the SSO beyond 1000 and it's not even listed.  I can't find it online.  The only thing I can find is some Star Trek creature which somewhat bothers me.  What are your thoughts?

I personally think there is a big difference between uncommon older names such as Arthur, Alasdair, Cedric, or Augusta ... and Tribble. Which from what I can tell is not even a name.

First thought: dribble. Then dog food (for some reason). Nothing appealing comes from it. It just does not sound anything like a name to me.

Yeah my first thought was the Star Trek episode The Trouble with Tribbles as well.  I certainly would not want to be named after a furry alien.

I didn't make up the name.  It would be different if I asked about some crazy alternate spelling.  There is a real person on TV with this name.  It is not a TV character.

  • Perhaps she was asking because she wasn't sure it if was a legitimate name and she wanted to give the name her husband suggested a chance before immediately vetoing and attacking it. She looked it up, found nothing, and wanted to make sure someone on here didn't know something she didn't. What is wrong with that?

ETA - Sorry, it didn't quote. Guess I accidentally hit reply.

  • I thought this was a joke post at first, since the only time I ever heard the word Tribble was from Star Trek.  But yeah, Tribble Reese was a college football player and is on that TV show, Sweet Home Alabama.  His first name is Herbert though.  I don't like his first or middle name, and I think it would be open for quite a bit of teasing.

Tribble sounds like trouble! :) NMS, though...

The Star Trek episode is actually called "The Trouble with Tribbles." :)

Tribbles were little furry things that multiply rapidly. I'm not a trekkie, but my parents were so I imagine many people your child would meet would have this association and assume you were huge Star Trek fans.

I really can't picture this name, if it is one, on an actual human being (though I did have a hamster named Tribble). I would probably laugh if I heard it, just because it seems so silly.

    Sorry.

  • If you hate your child, by all means, name it Tribble.

Thank you for your frankness but your comment is overly aggressive.  Read the thread.  You'll see that my husband has already crossed off the name given the valid comments.  To say anyone could hate a child is just ridiculous and unnecessary.

Also, you seem very defensive.  Maybe this board is not for you?

I actually have a thick skin but I will stand up to comments that are either not constructive or ridiculous. I didn't respond to most threads (fribble, trouble, star trek, kibble, dribble) because I AGREE with them! All valid points and their comments helped DH get this name out of head. Usually a poster is just looking for a sounding board before naming their child. Often this board jumps all over a poster. I plan on sticking around and will continue to provide feedback on posts that I can add value.

    It's a last name.

But most people will associate it with Star Trek.  Tribbles are a really corny thing to name your child after.

  • Like "dribble?" Ummm, no.

I'm sorry, that's just not a name. There are plenty of names that will go with Griffin and Collin nicely, but Tribble isn't one of them.
