What does a full moon have to do with going into labor?

I don't get the correlation. Could somebody enlighten me? :)

Re: What does a full moon have to do with going into labor?

  • My Great-Grandmother is over 100 years old gave birth to 13 babies, and she  says that she knew when she would have them by counting 9 full moons from the one right after her last period.  All of her babies were born the week of the full moon.  My aunts, great-aunts, cousins, grandmother, and mother all counted their due date this way and it's been eerily accurate ( some exceptions obviously). My mother went into labor the night of the full moon with me.

It has something to do with water.  The Moon affects the tides of water, aNd since we are made of 60% (newborn babies are around 80%) water, it is theorized that the moon has pull over us too.  And it is true that emergency rooms are busier on the nights of full moons.

How much of it you want to believe is up to you.

  • Moon - tides - water. That is all I know, lol. When my BFF had her baby it was a full moon and she said the nurses told her the ward is always packed when it is a full moon. I don't know how many of those are false alarms set off by an OWT though!

  • my mom just told me about this the other day, my grandmother would look at a calendar whenever someone would tell her that they are pregnant and would predict that they would have the baby on the 9th full moon, or new moon near the due date. and it's proven to be pretty accurate with all of her predictions. My mom whipped out the calendar (since my grandmother passed away) and told me that I'm going to have my son on feb 22 which is the new moon before my due date march 1st, which also happens to be the anniversary of my grandmothers passing, how cool. I guess I'll get my chance to see just how accurate this theory is lol

I'm still not sure if I believe it. But apparently that's how people back in the day used to determine when they're babies would be due because they didn't have calendars or something like that haha.

  • The night I went into labor with my first son was a full moon. They told me within a couple hours after I came in there was a line of pregnant women waiting for delivery rooms because they were all full.

  • Lunar cycle is 28 days.  Average menstrual cycle is 28 days.  Average pregnancy is 280 days.

As others have said, it's likely something to do with the gravitational pull of the moon.

  • The 10th is also a total Lunar Eclipse.  Wonder what that means in terms of labor??  Interesting though!!

See, now, I have a hard time believing that "the full moon effect" is total hogwash. The full moon effects the ocean, it effects animals in the ocean. It dictates spawning cycles, migration patterns, even behavior patterns of many types of animals... Why would it not effect us humans(also animals) in some way too? We are not that special.

Maybe some people take advantage of the idea to cause havoc and be stupid. But its cant be completly impossible.
