Bell's Palsy???

Anyone have any experience with Bell's Palsy during pregnancy? I'm having some of the symptoms and after researching online, it looks like its not that uncommon in pregnancy. Hoping someone can share some experience...I'm staring to get worried. I just keep reading the same information online over and over.

  • I taught with a girl who had it.  No experience other than watching her suffer from it.  Have you called your doctor?

  • a mom on my local board had it with her first pg (singleton... she then had twins afterwards) - i forget her nest name- but you could come to the NJ nest board and ask and likely she'll chime in. I know it got better afterwards.  She was actually on A Baby Story for that pregnancy and talked about it on the show.
I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • My sister had it(between pregnancies). It took her about two years(not pregnancy bells palsy, you will recover way faster!!) to have full control of the left side of her face back. But now she is completely healed. If you have any questions she doesn't mind talking about it and she learned a lot from having gone through it.

BUT, pregnancy Bells Palsy goes away way faster. She always tells people to keep your eyes well moistened so it doesn't cause permanent damage from your eye being dry. And do everything you can to keep the swelling in your body down (drink plenty of water and talk to your doctor about an anti-inflammatory that is safe for pregnancy) because the added water pressure is what makes the symptoms worse.

It's not fun, but you will get through it. Every case is different & some doctors know way more than others.

Good Luck :) Let me know if you have any questions for her :)

  • I developed Bells at 32.5 weeks. I honestly thought I was having a stroke. They put me on Valacyclovir and Prednisone. It finally cleared up around the time Jack came home, so I had it about 5-6 weeks total. They did have to give me another steroid during delivery due to the prior steroid therapy, but other than that, it cleared up relatively quickly for me. Still sucked, I was so self-conscious and I looked terrible in the boys early pictures. But it wasn't anything life-threatening and the meds didn't hurt the boys.

  • I'm 39 weeks today, and I just came down with it last week. Woke up with right sided facial weakness on thanksgiving day. I keep on trying to think positive that it will get better :-). They put me on prednisone and I'm hoping it will clear up in the weeks after delivery!
