C-sections

If you were put under for your csection...

This might sound like a silly question, but I am preparing for a VBAC in the next few weeks. It is my understanding that there is a good chance that if I do have a c-section, I will be put under general anesthesia. How long are you out for? I am worried about breastfeeding the baby right away. I just had an epi for my previous c-section and was able to nurse very soon after. Do you think I should have donor milk on hand? My cousin has a ton of frozen milk and has volunteered to give me some anyway. Should I bring some to the hospital? I'm sorry if this sounds ignorant, just trying to plan.

Re: If you were put under for your csection...

  • I was out for a good 2 hours.  They had to feed her while I was under.

Also, the g/a made it difficult for A to breast feed.

  • planning VBAC here too. DR said she would rather give me Epi if it looks like an RCS will occur, but understands my rather legit fears of interventions. Last time, I ended up GA for the Emergency CS. I woke up 3 hours later, but DD was with DH the entire time I was out and then recovering. No harm done, she bonded with daddy, and latched on fine after I joined them

Regarding milk... Since Nature sees fit to only provide a newborn colostrum for the first day or two, I think LO will be fine for a couple hours after birth with DH to cuddle and bond with. I know from stuff I have read, babies have "brown fat" at birth that processes to energy more efficiently and helps sustain them until your milk comes in. Some weight loss after birth is expected, but Hospitals dont like it to exceed a certain %. Dont remember what %....

There is a breast feeding board here on bump, check it out, and chat with the ladies there.

  • I got put out in the middle both times.  I get complications with the anesthsia during...so they ended up putting me to sleep after seeing the baby.

I am usually out for about two hours after....My kids are both formula fed though.  After I am awake and they move me to my room I was always brought my babies.

  • I really don't know how long I was "out" for, but I was in and out of consciousness for like 6 hours where I would feel like I needed to wake up but could not fully. Then I would drift to sleep for a little bit. I was in no shape to nurse during that time. I really think they may have given me pain meds or something after I woke up that had a sedative effect. Whatever it was I did not hold DS until almost 9 hours after he was born. DH held him though right after he was cleaned up and I was all stiched up, they let him come in and hold him and he actually talked to me and said I responded but I don't really remember any of it.

  • Also, my OB prefers to have an epi in place for vbacs if possible to lessen the risk of being put under general if you do end up with a repeat section, so maybe talk to your doctor unless you are going to try for a med free birth.

  • I probably woke up after about 2 hours, but I was so groggy for a super long time (maybe 6 or so hours). I didn't try to nurse until I was fully awake. DS was not fed anything during that time, and it all worked out ok.
  • I was out for roughly 3 hours. During that time they syringe fed DS formula, which I was fine with. Because of how everything went down I was emotionally and physically unable to BF when I met him but after I rested things went well and he had no problems BFing. I want to say that was probably a good 7 hours after he was born that I BF.
