potty training advice or book rec

Evie is starting to act ready to potty train, but I am pretty much at a loss as to where to start.

Any advice or book recs?

  • When we started, we went hardcore.  It was definitely not a short process, but I do think boys pose some unique challenges!

We started by buying Aiden big boy underwear and several potties (Ikea has a great cheap one).  Potties were in his room, in our family room, in the playroom, etc.  We would sit on the potty VERY often to try to pee.  I also pumped him full of water so he'd be more apt to pee!  If he went a while without peeing, he'd sit on the potty and read books.  I bought cloth trainers for while we were out.  He still wore diapers at nap and bed.

He was pee trained within a month, but did have some setbacks and most definitely needed to be reminded to go to the bathroom.  Poop was another story altogether.  He'd wait till nap or bedtime to poop.  He eventually (after 2ish months) pooped on the potty (for DH, of course).  It was then another 6 months before he'd do it at daycare.

I personally don't believe in giving rewards like candy for going on the potty.  What happens if you're out and you don't have the reward with you and your kid needs to go?  We gave lots of praise and hugs.  We also didn't punish if he had an accident.  He'd have a natural consequence (I'd often take away his pants if he peed through them because I told him he only got one pair of pants to wear a day.  Cruel a bit, but it worked.  He did NOT like walking around the house in his underwear!)

Above all, be patient.  It's hard work, but it's got great rewards!

  • It sounds like Lauranne and I used similar methods. We also did the multiple Ikea potty thing- they are $4 and we have 4 of them. We kept one in the car, one in DD's bedroom, one in the bathroom and one in whatever room DD was playing in. Sometimes there was a potty on the deck, etc.

I never bought a book for me about pt'ing, but we did get the book "A Potty for Me" by Karen Katz to read to DD. They have it at PBK.

  • DD isn't showing any signs yet of being ready to start, but I was at an independent toy store in Bel Air and they had "Princess of the Potty" (they also had the "Prince of the Potty"!)  so I bought it for when it is time.

When she starts getting more interested, my plan is to try to skip the little potty and have her just try on the big ones, but if she resists that, then I am all for multiple little potties.

Sidenote - I'm not even sure how to tell when she's ready. I ask every time before she takes a bath if she wants to sit on the potty and she says "yes" and then I say "ok" and then she says "no, no, no!" and runs away. I take this to mean she is not ready and I am definitely not pushing it. I hope eventually she'll just start saying yes and actually meaning it. As for now, she likes to flush potties and she knows what they are, but that's about it.
