C-sections

Regrets with opting for rcs (vs trying VBAC)?

with DS, I had to have an emergency c/s due to fetal distress after FTP (after induction at 41w3d). I had been hoping to try a VBAC but I'm really having a hard time physically with this pregnancy, and am now leaning towards a repeat c/s if that means having an end in sight. But, I really don't want to regret not trying for a VBAC.

Does anyone regret going straight to a rcs and not trying a VBAC?

  • No, I don't. I will have one at 39w5d. I think that if you feel that you may regret it maybe you should try the VBAC and if it doesn't work out for you (that's ok) at least you know that you've tried.

  • Not one bit.  It isn't safe for me or my babies to deliver them vaginally.  I was happy to do the repeat section.  I don't dilate no matter what...not worth even trying.

Everyone has different circumstances and sometimes vbacs work out well.  Do what is best for you and your baby.

  • Although I didn't have the option to try with my doctor...I don't regret it.  But I think that if you are already having the feeling of regret of not trying, then maybe you should give it a go.

I think I could have delivered vaginally the second time.  I went into labor on my own even...but my hospital does not do VBAC's so it wasn't an option.  But I don't regret having the c-section.  My son is here and healthy and that is all that matters to me.

  • I did have a VBAC but even if my second pregnancy ended in a c/s I personally would have regretted not trying to VBAC.  As pps said, it is a really personaly decision but if you are already wondering if you might regret it, you should consider going for it.  You can change to a rcs at any point, you don't have to make this decision now.

  • if you are already second guessing yourself regarding RCS or VBAC. try VBAC, if you get halfway into it and decide you cannot, or the Dr feels your body is not handling it, you tried, and then get the RCS. No big deal. Most Dr's are o.k. with "trial by labor" Talk to DR.

  • I agree with PP's, I am also a VBAC hopeful and I know that I would regret at least not trying. For me I know this is my only chance to try for my VBAC and get it because if I went straight for the RCS I would always choose RCS in the future (personal choice). But if I go for the TOL and fail, then at least I know I tried it and it just wasn't meant to be, however if I have my TOL and succeed with my vaginal birth then I know I won't have any regrets! I know the last few weeks are long and hard, but I say go for it, you can always change your mind in the end! Good luck either way!

  • I didn't really have a choice with any of my deliveries, but I can tell you, having had a VBAC (w #2) and a repeat c/s (w #3), I'd have chosen the RCS, no doubt.  My VBAC was no fun, and while my RCS recovery wasn't puppies and rainbows, I'd still do it again (which I will in May). Good luck with your decision.

  • No, not at this point.  Before I had DD, I really wanted to try for a VBAC, but I also didn't want another c/s after labor.  I think that makes recovery, and the whole experience, much harder.   With DD1, I had a horrible c/s experience, and I didn't want that this time around, so I went straight for the rcs.  The second c/s and recovery were really wonderful, and I'm glad I had the experience I did.
