Food Allergy

peanut oil in medicine (?)

My son has some eczema on his scalp. It doesn't bother me and it's not a lot but DH is a psycho and needs everything to be perfect on our child so he sent me to the dermatologist with him.. i sooo did not want to go but it was the only way to shut him up and stop complaining about his scalp.

The dermatologist prescribed Fluocinolone Acetonide 0.01% Topical oil.  My DH was about to put it on his scalp but first read the ingredients and it says: "contains refined peanut oil. However, this medicine has not been known to cause an allergic reaction in patients who have a peanut allergy."

I absolutely do not feel comfortable putting it on his scalp that might have open marks due to scratching.  His peanut allergy is ridiculously high and the last thing i wan is anything with the ingredient peanut oil to come near him.

Anyone has successfully used a product like this on their peanut allergic kid?

  • I don't have experience, but you better believe that would not be touching my daughter's scalp!  Did you call the allergist and ask?

i left a message with the allergist this morning so i'm sure she'll call me back soon. but i'm so pissed b/c i didn't read the ingredients... thankfully DH did and we were planning on putting it on his scalp right before he went to sleep.. if he was to react, we wouldn't have known until the morning.. i'm sick to my stomach with the though of what the worst scenario could have been.

Even if the allergist says it's safe i'm staying away from it.

  • I was told my my pedi that most of the the refined versions of peanut oil supposidly lack the protein that would trigger a reaction in those with nut allergies. She said that the refined oil is suppose to have healing and calming properties, which is why it is in some of the hair and skin oils. But each company is different, and each child's sensitivity is different. So, I said, based on my child's numbers, would you suggest I use an oil with refined peanut oil, and she said NO. She said, although the chance of a reaction may be minimal, she would not want to risk it with my son. She commented that several of her parents who have kids with nut allergies allow their children to eat chick fila nuggets, which are cooked in refined peanut oil, and they have not had a problem. Her son has a nut allergy, and I asked her point blank, DO YOU LET HIM EAT THERE? and she said No. So, that gave me my answer. I would avoid it, and ask for a topical that does not have the peanut oil in there.

  • Yikes.  You could also call the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist. DD also gets really bad eczema on her scalp and the only thing that was worked for us is the California Baby Tea tree and Lavendar shampoo. Cleared her up and has kept her clear.

  • That's crazy!!  I'd call your derm. and get a different rx.

Or- for my kiddos- when their cradle cap was really nasty we used plain old olive oil and that helped heal it right up.  Makes their hair a little greasy- but it's safe and effective.  Maybe give it a shot and see if it helps?

side note- when is your due date?  You have to be super close now right?

  • i'm still waiting for the doc to call me back, but not sure if it even matters since i don't plan on using it even if she says go ahead.

We use California baby as the head/body soap and we tried head and shoulders a week ago.. so tonight we'll do the olive oil. We stopped introducing soy to him just in case he's reacting and now i wonder if that's the cause of it.  Or it could just be that winter is coming and it may just be dry skin..

g_belle -i'm scheduled for a c-section on Dec 15th but i would totally love it if he decided to come today, like right now!  I'm so done and ready. 2 more weeks!!!! which seems like a life time away

  • Playing around on the interwebs I found some forums from the mid 2000s that say that certain types of Benadryl contain(ed) soy, dairy, corn and is processed in an factory that processes peanuts.  Really?

yayks! it really shows you how you really can never let you guard down. i don't get why an allergy medicine would contain anything soy since soy has been a problem for a while now.  I guess maybe that's why they got rid of it.
