I was just about to go out and buy 10 gallons of milk for my coffee shop when I started wondering why pregnant women weren't supposed to lift heavy things.
When I googled it, the first link was this one:

FWIW, I was in the middle trimester of my second pregnancy, when I picked something up out of my car trunk and felt a "pop" inside. I started leaking. A couple days later the miscarriage was complete. Now, there may have been no cause and effect there at all, just a coincidence, something that would eventually have happened anyway. But then again, there might have been. As my doctor told me when I asked about a previously-planned trip to Japan during my first pregnancy, "Why take a chance? Japan will still be there next year." Obviously YMMV, ask the real doctor, etc. |
Re: yikes-- not lifting heavy things anymore...
Oh man! And now I'm feeling really bad about what I did tonight leaving work... I've been really good about having other people do heavy lifting for me, but I haven't told my work I'm pregnant so I opted to take all of the boxes for my work event on Saturday out to my car by myself. They weren't super heavy, maybe a little less than 20 pounds each, so I knew if I asked for help I'd have to explain.
It made me really winded (I get out of breath easy now anyway), but that's all. Reading that makes me feel bad about it though... I won't do it again...
My MIL had a miscarriage and told us that it was because she was lifting something heavy, needless to say, my DH wont let me lift ANYTHING!
My brother asked me to help him lift something and I told him I couldnt because I was pregnant. He said to me "your pregnant not disabled.." my husband freaked on him. I feel stupid saying I cant lift things to other people, because not everyone knows you shouldnt lift heavy things when your pregnant but I know its for the babies safety so I really dont care what they think!
I wouldn't take this too seriously my doctor told me last time the risks of hurting the baby are slim from lifting something heavy if you do it with your legs and not your back. What they are more worried about is you hurting your back since during pregnancy your ligaments are looser to get ready for birthing the baby. I was told no more than 20lbs until I told her I was used to lifting 50 plus pounds multiple times a day then she said I could lift 40lb until the third tri.
As for being pregnant not disabled I AGREE with that 100% If you are having a normal healthy pregnancy there is no reason to stop doing normal things.
I go to the gym and regularly lift with 15 and 20lb kettle bells (typically a pair of them) and a trainer - this is more controlled i know, but still is fairly heavy.
i'm also a pretty strong and strong minded person and don't like to ask for help. DH does not agree with this... i lifted a small foldable table over my head (easier to bear weight this way then carrying in front i think!) to carry into the garage and he flipped and i def used the line "I'M PREGNANT NOT DISABLED!" lol
