Tummy Sleeping...

Okay, I am thinking about not even posting but my daughter has not slept well at all these first 3 months but almost everytime I put her on her tummy to do tummy times she curls up with her thumb and falls asleep instead.  Do you think it's ever okay to lay them down to sleep on their tummies?  I have never done it because of fear of SIDs...

Re: Tummy Sleeping...

  • So, she is 3 months old now?

Does she flip over on to her tummy by herself yet?  Supposedly once they can flip back & forth on their own, it is safe to tummy sleep.

Personally, I would still lay her on her back for now and if you do have her tummy sleep, do it for naps where you can be right there with her to keep an eye on things.

  • Our LO would NOT sleep on her back. We got a side sleeper and she slept on her side. The moment she could roll over on her own she slept in her crib on her belly.

  • She rolls from her back to her stomach if motivated but doesn't roll from her belly to her back... she doesn't even seem to try.  She's cholicy and I don't know if it just feels better to be on her tummy or what.  I let her nap on her tummy and check on her frequently but when I lay her on her back she sleeps for maybe an hour at a time.  Maybe more tummy time and hope she soon rolls over?

  • There's not a chance that I'd risk it, especially at that age and since she's not rolling herself into that position on her own or can roll herself back.  https://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/cribsheet/2008/02/26/please-dont-take-my-sunshine-away/

  • I wouldn't do it.  I wouldn't be able to sleep, I'd be up watching her all night.  Even when DD#1 started rolling onto her belly I would flip her back on her back.  I think I finially eased up around 10 months when she started pulling herself up.

  • Until she can roll over easily on her own I wouldn't put her down. My DD would sleep better on her tummy too. If she did happen to flip herself I would roll her back over. I think it was around 7-8 months were she was a master roller so I wasn't as concerned.

  • Thanks ladies!

I just re-read some info on SIDS and it says that the majority of cases occur between 2-4 months.  I can make it though a couple more months of sleepless nights!  Just needed some reinforcement from some other moms I think : )

  • My baby slept on her tummy at about 4 weeks.  We just found that she slept better on her stomache.  We did trial runs at nap time just to watch her but if she can hold her head up good you should be ok.  You have to do what's best for you and your baby.  I am a tummy sleeper and also remember that the sleep recommendations change all the time.  When I was a kid I am sure it was tummy.  Good luck.
  • Once she can roll on her own both ways, I'd say it's fine, but until then I'd stick to the back to prevent sids.
