Sophie was a huge hit- the Seahorse - not so much. My sons favorite toys when he was a few months old were the Manhattan Toys Winkel, Sophie, Chan Pie, Those cheap plastic links that come in a big pack, and his Tiny Love Serenade mobile.

For us the Seahorse was one of our best buys. He turns it on in the middle of the night NOW/STILL and goes back to sleep. The Sophie was good for a few months but now he doesn't give a crap about it.
We got both as gifts. DD never did care for the seahorse. Sophie, on the other hand, was in her hand 24/7 for the longest time. She still chews on her now, at 13 mos.
The seahorse was definitely as great as the hype. She doesn't care about it anymore, but it helped her go to sleep when we moved her to her crib for a long time.
Sophie was eh. Not worth it IMO.

We never had the seahorse but Sophie was a MUST HAVE. It was the only teether my son would take. We are on our 3rd Sophie! #1 was lost at the mall and #2 was lost on an airplane. We had to frantically track down a Sophie while we were on vacation. And I did try every other teether I could find.
Noah loved Sophie from about 4-7 months, but the seahorse he has always been kind of "meh" about. For us it definitely wasn't the magic everyone said it was.
I think they are just like every other toy. Some kids love them, some hate them, but you won't know until you try it. If you can find a good deal I would probably get both.
I never got Sophie for the boys but they still sleep with the seahorse. They didn't really get it and like it at first but now they sleep with it every night. I hear them wake up during the night sometimes and turn it back on and go to sleep. I think it really does help them.
At almost 20 months we still use the seahorse every nap/bedtime. Sophie lost her luster quickly and has been buried at the bottom of the toy box for quite some time.
Re: Sophie? FP Seahorse?
DS didn't give two licks about his SH for quite a long time. Now he LOVES it at night. He gives it a kiss every evening before laying his head down.
He was pretty fond of Sophie for a while but now he won't even look at her. I really don't think Sophie lived up to the hype.
