Pregnant after a Loss

Christmas is coming early!

Now I know why I was freaking out so much earlier... must have been a sign.

At our ultrasound today, my OB noticed that my fluid level is low. Not dangerously low, but enough so that we're getting another ultrasound next week, and as long as LO is still doing good (she looks perfect now) then she is going to induce me at 37 weeks. CUE FREAK OUT!

I thought I had another 4 weeks, and now we're looking at 1, maybe 2 at the most. Holy sh**balls. I cried for a solid 20 minutes. I really wanted her to stay in for as long as possible, and go into labor on my own, but I will do whatever it takes to make sure she's okay. I just can't help but be worried that 37 weeks is too soon, but I trust my doctor. I was not mentally prepared for this news!

So could you spare some T&Ps that:

a. LO keeps gaining weight (she's a dainty 6 lbs now, I would love for her to gain some more weight before then)

b. That I continue to progress on my own so that induction is more favorable (I'm only 1cm now)

c. That LO hangs on to the little fluid that is left. I feel like I failed her somehow :(

I am trying so hard to hold it together, but it's still very scary!

Re: Christmas is coming early!

  • Wow that is a very quick change in plans!!! I know you desperately want LO to stay in there nice and tight for a little while longer but it sounds like it is better for him to come now.

I will keep you in my t's and p's for a safe healthy delivery and that LO is strong and gets some weight on him!!!

  • Aww, can't believe how close you are!  LO is going to be great, the Dr's know what they are doing, and 37 weeks is considered full term.  I am sure it's overwhelming, but how exciting that you might be cuddling your baby girl in a week!  Squeeeeeeee!  Smile

  • I'm sorry that the ultrasound turned out to be less than optimal. At least your LO looked perfect otherwise! Try pushing fluids this week, it's possible that it will help get your levels up or at least stay above the danger line, and maybe your OB will consider a later induction date. Good luck, and lots of T&P's are with you!

  • First, you didn't fail her!  You guys are just going to meet sooner rather than later!  I hope she keeps on gaining wait (the books say at this point it's about a half pound a week) - so she'll be perfect!  And tons of juju that you keep on progressing so that labor and delivery is a piece of cake for you both.  I'm so excited that you're going to be meeting your little girl soon!!  I know it's kind of scary, but your doc knows you and LO and it's going to be AWESOME!  Tons and tons (and more tons) of good juju for all of you!

  • Everything is going to be just fine, smallfry!!!  You have in no way failed your LO - put that thought out of your mind right now.  I'll put in my T&Ps, but you sound like you're in great hands with your doc. Hang in there and try to rest up for what lies ahead!

  • Sending lots of T&Ps for you and your little girl. You have not failed her in any way, shape, or form- don't beat yourself up over this.

  • I completely understand your freak out - I was induced at 37w due to high BP. I knew I'd be induced early (38-39w) but at my 37w appt my BP was so high Dr. said I was needed to be induced - that night! Cue major freak out and lots of tears.

I was worried 37w was too soon also - but DD came out perfectly healthy at 7lb12oz. She did have a little jaundice which is common esp with babies who come early - but totally treatable quickly & easily.

The night of my induction I wasn't dialated at all - cervix high and hard. It took some work and time - but I vaginally delivered her. So at 1cm you're looking better than I was.

Lots of T&Ps that she continues to grow and thrive and that your body does what it needs to for labor and delivery (in a week of so).

  • Sending you t&ps and also wanted to tell you that my DD1 was born at 36w3d and was 6.8 lbs.  She turned out perfectly fine.  I know you want to keep her in as long as possible but just know that she will be fine if she is born at 37 weeks.  GL to you at your next appt.

  • I totally know what you mean about freaking out about finding out baby will be coming earlier than you'd planned.  I went into my 37w appt and was told I was being induced THAT DAY.  Having your birth plan get thrown out the window is hard.  Hearing that your baby will be a smidge early is even harder.  You can do this though.

Just want to address the concerns you have:

*At 37 weeks most likely your baby will do fine on the outside.  If they can, have them check for lung maturity (in my case they didn't and he was fine).  The only differences we noticed with D from being a smidge early was that he was little (6lb 2oz) and that in the first few days he didn't have much stamina for sucking.  He caught on quick when my milk came in with the sucking and he's growing/developing spot on (discovered how to suck his thumb todayYes) ETA: He had a touch of jaundice, but it cleared up on its own with no lights.

*I was 1cm when they sent me in to be induced, 2cm by the time they administered the pitocin.  My induction was a long one (26 hrs from the start of pit to baby in arms), but I was able to avoid a section.

*My issue wasn't low fluid, it was Pre-E, but I know the feeling of feeling like your body failed your child.  I cried over that a bunch in the hospital.  Thing is that you didn't fail her.  For starters I'm pretty sure its HER body making the fluid.  Secondly, you've given her a safe place to grow nice and strong...and you'll continue to do that when she's an outside baby.

Now, if you haven't already, go make sure that car seat is ready, get your bags packed, make sure you have some newborn clothes and diapers in the house and get ready for the ride of your lifeWink

  • Many thoughts & prayers sent your way. Your doctor's want what is best for baby, so trust them and all will be okay. It's of course nerve racking it's happening sooner than you think, but I have had many friends who have delivered @ 36/37 weeks and had strong & healthy babies!
