Give me your best constipators (-ers?)

For B.  He's had runny diarrhea for a week now.  He  vomited last Monday (early morning), Wed night, and Saturday night.

He missed school last Monday and Wednesday, and school was cancelled today due to bus vandalism.....but he really NEEDS to go back tomorrow with no issues.

I called the dr - they aren't too concerned until it has been 2 weeks of diarrhea, or if he vomits again, or the diarrhea is 10+ times/day (he goes about 4-6).

He 'feels' good, and is about 90% normal, maybe a bit lazy.  I have been pushing bread and applesauce, am going to fix rice for dinner....sticking to milk/water (no juice/diluted juice). And I have bananas.

Any other foods?

FWIW, G, E & I all had the vomiting/diarrhea Thurs night....but a max of 12 hours....we're all back to normal.

  • Cheese works pretty good too. Are you giving him yogurt or a probiotic?

I bought some powdered probiotic from the health food stuff and put it in DD's drink and it really helps and it's fairly fast acting too.

  • Cheese, lots of forms of rice - rice cakes for snack, rice crackers. Make sure to avoid fiber - skip the healthy whole wheat, whole grains etc for now and load that kid up on processed and refined white bread, crackers etc.
  • I just gave him a probiotic chewable this morning (totally forgot about it until last night).

And cheese - excellent.  I'll force feed him.  bwahaha!

    Thanks ladies.

  • Probiotic. I gave it to Emily and it helped really quickly.
  • IME, adding milk back too soon can make the symptoms last longer.  I might just stick to water and electrolyte drinks.  If your electrolytes remain off balance/low then the symptoms tend to continue as well.
  • Rice chex and rice cakes.  Kids like them and don't know that they're eating it for a "special" reason.
    DS1 age 7, DD age 5 and DS2 born 4/3/12
  • bananas, rice and probiotics.

Hmmm...I dunno about that. Our dietician and pedi both say Benefibre and other forms of fibre (bran etc) are good for adding bulk to watery stool. It works for Joey, but I guess maybe not for everyone?

interesting. My gasto says to avoid fiber after a GI illness because it is work for the colon to digest high fiber and after an illness you want to rest your colon. Perhaps the fiber recommendation is specific to illness and not just run of the mill BM changes?
