I'm on the verge of tears.....car seat related

My SIL borrowed our carseat for her last child. Long story short, her biological sister had a baby and tested positive for drugs so the baby was turned over the CPS. My SIL couldn't afford to buy a carseat so we let her borrow ours since it was just sitting in storage. When I gave it to her it was in great condition. We got it back today and it looks like it's been heavily used/mistreated. The handle has teeth marks and chunks of rubber bit out the handle. It literally looks like a dog chewed on it. DH said that we could get another one if I want. I'm so furious that I gave it to her to borrow only to receive it back in such poor shape. It makes me wonder how poorly she treated it, I obvioiusly don't want to use it for my next child which is due in 8 weeks.

  • She surely should have taken better care of it.  Did she know that you were only lending it to her with the expectation of wanting it back?  How old is it- would you even be able to use it or is it expired?  It sucks that she did that and took advantage of your generosity.

  • Look at the bright side, there are so many cute ones out there...you can go get a brand new one just for this baby!
  • The seat expires in July 2013 so I was planning on using it for #2. Yes, she knew that we wanted it back. She also used our bouncer and swing, I need to pull these things out to see if they are damaged too. The whole travel system is around 300 which I hate to rebuy but I think that is what we are going to do.
  • Thats a bummer, especially when you trusted her to take care of the seat. But, unfortunately that is a risk you get when you loan something out, granted most people would offer to replace, but others don't or don't have the means to. I would take it as a learning experience,  don't loan her things anymore. Take DH up on the offer to buy a new one.

    Ditto!

For me, I wouldn't loan someone items like that.  Items that I am expecting to use again in the future.  In that situation, I still would have helped out and given the car seat knowing that I probably wouldn't use it in the future and would be buying a new one when we had another baby.   I'm VERY picky about what I will use for my baby, most (not all) used (by someone else) items I won't use.

  • Now DH is saying that we should just go ahead and use it because the only visual teeth marks are on the handle/hand grip. To me, that is a really hard plastic and if parts of it are missing it has not been treated fairly. He's so worried that if we show up at his parents house with a new carseat that it will start something with his SIL. He thinks I should call her and see what happened to it? It's his SIL, I think he should do it?
  • Don't call your SIL, it's going to turn into an accusation fight, and it's just not necessary. You shouldn't ever give out carseats for loan-- it doesn't matter who it's being loaned to, a carseat is one thing that should never be borrowed/re-used by anyone other than your own children.

The only choice you have is to go out and buy a new carseat. Make something up if you have to, tell them that your mom bought you a new seat as a gift because she thought you needed one.

  • Go pick out a new carseat and drop it with the SIL..  It's just not worth your energy - and you never know, they might have a carseat turn-in event at BRU again and you can use that one for the 20% off coupon!!

My SIL borrowed our carseat (nephew was born 10mo after DD who was out of the seat at 4mo so we didn't even have time to beat it up... because the seat she had put in the garage from niece got eaten by mice), then at some point she decided to give it away to some carseat donation thing with the Fire Dept for families in need.  Which is great - but she never asked us...  Granted, I just found out about this in the past few days and the seat would likely be expired now, but still...  Oh well, it's just not worth getting peeved about - even if you are peeved!!!

  • If it makes you feel any better, I bought my sister a TON of expensive designer clothes up to 2T for her kids and she said she would save them for when I had a baby. Instead she sold them and kept the money.
  • I would give it back to her and let her know that you are buying a new one because of the condition it is in. But that just may be my passive aggressive pregnancy hormones speaking. I hope none of the other things you let her borrow are in bad condition as well!

  • Its only fair to return things in the best condition possible when you are borrowing and returning them. Not right.

hahaha....i LOVE this but would never do it. SIL is expecting again she is due two weeks after me. I have told her numerous times that she can just keep it  but she declines each time. She doesn't want to use "hand-me downs again" as she puts it. Yeah, I wouldn't want to use a dog chewed up car seat either.

I agree.  Unfortunately when you lend things to people you must prepare to receive them back in an unfortunate condition even if you ever receive it back.  It's like loaning money to family, you should never really expect to receive it back.  It's so sad but it's true.
