Internal vs. external US

I don't know why I can't remember, but I just can't... At what point can they see w/ the external US?  I know I had 2 w/ previous PG but they were internal b/c they wanted to get 'better' pictures - i had been having issues w/ spotting, nondoubling betas and was measuring behind anyway---those were at 6 & 7 weeks..

For some reason, i am thinking if they are just taking a look w/ an external one US they should be able to see at 7 week right?

I will be 7W5D at my appt. and I am hoping my OB does one.. He always has an US machine hanging around the office and usually grabs it "just to see-for fun" like he puts it..

    I had to go to the hospital when I was 6w4d I think, and they did an external and you could see everything. My H could even see the little flicker of the heartbeat.

    I had an external at 6w1d, and we saw the flickering heartbeat. We couldn't see more than that though.
    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.

    They did an internal for me with my first and with this baby.  I didn't get an external with my DS until I was 12 weeks.  I also have a tilted uterus though and they did try an external this time last week, but couldn't see anything at all.

    My first ultrasound at 7 wks was only internal and the one this week at 9 wks is likely to be an internal one.  Not sure if it's because my RE knows my uterus is retroflexed and doesn't see the point in trying with the external or if she just prefers the internal scanning at early gestational ages.  I do like not having to keep a full bladder because as she said at my mock transfer (external scan), I'm such an over achiever than even my kidneys are over achievers.  And of all days, that was the only time she's ever been behind schedule!

    It's been my experience like a few other posts mentioned that the placement of your uterus plays a role. I'm also not wondering if with your size plays a role, the tech told me I was "thin" enough that an external u/s would be fine, but that was until they determined that I was "tilted"...

    Thanx ladies.. From last 2 PG I didn't have tilted cervix/uterus---I don't think that changes w/ each prengancy... W/ DS I had a few external ones but cannot for the life of me remember if the one I had done at 7W was internal or external.. (had spotting w/ PG#1)... Just hoping he does one or fun in his office--and that it's an external one-and that I see my baby :-)
