Should I be concerned, DS strange thing while sleeping.

Not sure if this is normal or something I should be concerned about.  Admittedly, I am a little on edge because this is the DS that we are already concerned about because of his head tilt and poor head control (we go to the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow so hopefully will have some answers).

Last night, both boys woke at the same time.  DH took one and I took S.  DH calmed E down and put him in his crib (we were trying CIO) and he was screaming, so S and I were on the couch.  I BF him a little and he fell back to sleep and I had him on my shoulder burping him.  One of the monitors was in the room so we could hear E crying.

Well, S started almost wimpering (but louder in his sleep).  It was like he was dreaming about crying or something and his body was (don't want to say jerking) but moving a bit when he was making the noises, he was breathing in hard and it was almost like hiccuping, but he was just about half crying.  I tried to cuddle him more to calm him but it didn't help.  It lasted less than a minute then he stopped, but he kept doing it again and again.  I tried holding him in a different position (cradling instead of on my shoulder) and that didn't help either.  I tried to move him during an episode, but nothing would stop him from doing it til he was done.  Eventually the episodes stopped and we put him in our bed for the rest of the night because we were not sure what he was doing.  He didn't do it again.  He seemed fine this morning, and I just talked to my mom and he has sucked down both bottles, but is napping much more than he usually does.

I guess I am just paranoid about everything else, but this doesn't sound like  a seizure of some sort does it?  I have the 6 month pedi appt on Thursday and I hope I am just being paranoid, but wondering if anyone else's DC has done this and if it is normal?

  • Oh goodness - this would have freaked me out as well.  I haven't noticed this in my kids but it certainly doesn't hurt if you mention it.  Mother's intuition - even if the pedi says it's nothing I would keep monitoring it.  Worse case scenario - you get a second opinion.  Good Luck!

  • It sounds a lot like a night terror, which is a lot like a nightmare but you can't wake a baby up from one. But to be on the safe side, it's probably a good idea to mention it to your doctor.

Good luck at your appointment tomorrow, btw. I hope you get nothing but wonderful news!

  • Something VERY similar happened with one of mine a few months back - it was like he was wimpering in his sleep, and his body twitched a few times.  It didn't last very long (maybe 30 seconds) but defeitely long enough to freak us out.  I asked the ped about it and she said since it didn't last, and he woke up fine, it was probably just a nightmare.  Hasn't happened since.  I would ask your pediatrician about it, but I'm sure its probably nothing to be worried about.
  • That happened to our Teddy a couple of weeks ago.  We had brought him into bed with us because he wouldn't settle down (not crying, just awake and wanting to play at 4:00 am) and we didn't want him to wake up his brother.  He finally fell asleep, and later I woke up to hear him whimpering in his sleep.  It sounded like he does when he's been crying hard is still kind of hiccuping/crying - but he was dead asleep and had not been crying at all.  It lasted about 10 minutes and he woke up fine the next morning.  I do think it was a nightmare, but it never hurts to ask the pedi for peace of mind!
