which face washes are safe to use?

What's the deal with face wash? I've heard that most acne face washes contain chemicals that should be avoided during pregnancy - does anyone know how much validity there is to this? Unfortunately, I have started breaking out out of nowhere over the past week but I don't want to use anything potentially harmful.

Re: which face washes are safe to use?

  • I'm still using Paula's Choice and did all the way thought my first pregnancy. I love her products and if I may say so, I have pretty nice skin -especially for a woman who's pushing 40.

(sorry I don't know how to make a linky on my mac)

  • I swear by Panoxyl which is a benzyl peroxide wash, but it says in one of my baby books that benzoyl peroxide is safe, but I've read other things that say it's not.  So I'm not using it until I get in to see my OB in a few weeks.  In the meantime I'm using Alpha Hydrox which contains glycolic acid as I have not read anything saying that's not safe.

  • My OB prescribed clindamycin "toner" (for lack of a better term - it's in a bottle and you wipe it on your face after washing it).  It's a generic so I think it was $4?  It worked really well on my acne.

  • I work for a dermatology practice- one doctor says benzoyl peroxide wash is safe to use during pregnancy, the other doctor is hesitant to prescribe it to pregnant women (but has said multiple times that he can't imagine it being harmful). I've read mixed things online as well. I have continued to use benzoyl peroxide wash since I found out we were expecting because most articles and the one doctor I work for says that you are washing most of the chemicals off and only a small amount is absorbed through your skin. I am going to ask my OB at our appointment on Tuesday for further clarification but for now, I'm still washing my face with it!

  • I didn't know anything about this- I use Cetaphil- is that ok?

  • My OB told me just avoid stuff with benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.  Also avoid retinol-a in face creams.

I've been a long-time user of the Tea Tree Oil line from the body shop and I've checked the ingredients lists on the products I use and they don't have those ingredients.  It keeps my acne in control.

I also get a glycolic acid peel once or twice a month depending on how I'm breaking out.

  • I'd imagine Cetaphil is fine. I'm using some Aveeno gentle cleanser and there is no chemical on the list of ingredients that I'm aware of being harmful to preggos...

  • Cetaphil is ok. CeraVe is another great OTC wash that's safe to use. I use the benzoyl peroxide wash in the AM and CeraVe wash at night. Hopefully once these hormones calm down and my face stops breaking out like a teenager going through puberty, I can switch to just using the CeraVe wash.

  • Anyone know about noxema? I have been using Burts Bees regular soap, just because I know it's all natural. I'm about to run out and have noxema but am just a little unsure. Isn't it crazy how many precautions we have to take now?

  • SO glad you posted this, I kept meaning to check into it again, I couldn't remember what was okay and what wasn't!

I wish I remembered what I used when I was pregnant with my son, guess I'll just have to find something new!

  • What?!  I have to change my face wash?! (and my entire skin care routine!!).  I've been using my acne fighting face wash, pimple cream, and toner this entire time!  I hope everything is ok....

I guess I'm heading out to the store today to buy new skin care products....
