TTC After a Loss

I'm having second thoughts about hsg

I am scared not of the pain but what if they mess it up? I just read the disclamer. What if I don't really need it? I got pregnant twice. If they mess up they can screw up your tubes. Should I call the Dr and see if they found anything in my chromosonal tests first? maybe I won't need it. Help I'm flipping out. It's this Friday.

Re: I'm having second thoughts about hsg

  • I would talk to your doc and ask why they are suggesting u have it. I had it as an infertility work up, I had never been preg. You have proven you can get pregnant. Unless they are using the hsg to detect something else that may have contributed to your losses-but you would have to ask the dr. Good luck, if the radiologist is good (meaning he/she does this test a lot) you will be ok!!!

  • What disclaimer did you read? I had also gotten pg twice on my own before the HSG. My doc wanted to do it to rule out any structural issues that could be affecting my chances of staying pregnant.

I know you are worried, but I've seen a lot of women on these boards (PL, TTCAL, SAL) that have had an HSG, and I have never ever heard of someone having complications from the procedure. The worst I'd heard was passing out on the table. And even that is rare. Hang in there!

  • I am sorry you are scared. It is done so many times to so many women.

I don't think it's easy to mess up. But you should talk to your Dr.

  • if you have second thoughts and you aren't comfortable, then don't do it. I think it's rather routine. I haven't heard much about messing up, but that isn't to say it doesn't happen.  I had to have my done to make sure my tube was open since they took the other half of it.  I had a reason to go through with it, but if you don't really NEED it, skip it.  I think Dr.'s just like to rule all things out before starting treatments you may not need. Good luck!
  • Awww, just remember that there are risks in everything.  There are risks in having a D&C and a c-section and so on, and so many women on here have been fine after their D&C.  Big hugs in whatever you decide, but I hope your fears are calmed.
  • I had read about that too and started really freaking myself out about it all.  I made myself quit reading it.  There are always going to be disclaimers for any procedure.  Maybe you should call your Dr to help calm any fears.  I'm glad I did it b/c I was able to know that there was nothing blocking my tubes or anything wrong with them.  ((BIG HUGS))

  • I also had mine after 2 losses.  They found that I had a uterine septum.  if the babies were implanting on (or too close to) the septum they weren't getting the nutrients that they needed.  I was able to have surgery to correct the septum and I am hopeful for our next pregnancy.  So, in my case the test was extremely beneficial.  And same as pps I've never heard of one going awry.  If you're still concerned, give your Dr a ring and hopefully s/he will be able to put your mind at ease.  Good Luck with whatever you decide :)
  • I share some of your same worries (I need to call on CD1 to schedule mine), but I think it will be good to get it done with.  It seems like a baseline test for infertility to rule out something that may be a huge obstacle (blockage).  I will get mine done when the time comes, but I'm sure you are anxious with it being a few days away.  I would get it done if I were you.  GL!
