Play kitchens?

We are thinking of getting DS a play kitchen as his birthday present. Does anyone have one they like and would recommend? Do you think it's something they stay interested in or one of those things that ends up shoved in the corner and not used?  I'm also wondering if girls stay interested in them longer. I know they're not just for girls, which is why we're looking at them, but I just hope he'll get some good use out of it.  I can't believe the ones they have out there now, some of them are enormous!

Re: Play kitchens?

  • My niece was almost 3 bofore she played with it on a regular basis.  My son really didn't show any interest until he was 2 or maybe 2 1/2 except for trying to eat the fake food and opening/closing doors.

  • We bought the fisher price laugh & learn kitchen set. He will be getting it for christmas. I know it states 6-36 months but I think that it will be a good start for him. Plus it wasn't all that expensive so if he doesn't like it for long it will be ok.

  • Thank you both! Maybe it is something we should wait on until next year (he has that little kitchen and likes it!).  So hard trying to figure out what to get him when Christmas and his birthday are just 6 days apart.

  • I have two sons, a 3.5 yr old and an 8 month old. Ds2 is getting a big kitchen (about 39 inches high) for Xmas and I am sure he will LoVE it. He is drawn to it when we go to the toy store and is obsessed with helping me make food right now. I wouldn't buy it right now if I just had my littlest guy, he is really more interested in sticking things in his mouth. I think one of those little kitchens he could play with sitting down would be mo appropriate for now. That said I think as soon as he is stable enough to play standing up he will be trying to participate with his big broth and by 14 months will be doing a pretty good job of it. Ds1 liked the one at a playdate we Went to around 20 months. Kitchens are good because they can do a lot with them, they can play tons of games with them, store things in them, etc.

  • We got one for DD on her first birthday. She played with it every day for hours at a time for months, then maybe only a few times a week for a while, and now she's back to using it multiple times a day. DS became very interested in it once he started crawling. He loves opening and closing the doors and pressing all the buttons that make noise -- that type of stuff excites them now, and then once their imaginations start going they get really good use out of it. DD has a lot of 3-4 year old friends, mostly boys, who LOVE her kitchen. Depends on the kid I guess, but I'm glad we got one.
