May 2012 Moms

My nephew had his 1st daughter yesterday and named her...

Nolan Harper R (3 syllable - sounds like Robinson).

I like Harper, but Nolan is a boy's name IMO.

WDYT?

  • That's a pretty masculine name for a little girl! Butt 8 do like Nolan for a boy and Harper for a girl.

  • Nolan is most def a boy's name IMO. Harper I liked until it got overly popular with the Hollywood crowd.

  • I'm confused as to why someone would name their little girl that. It sounds so masuline!  :-/

Agreed. He and his wife kept the baby's gender and name choices a secret until the baby was born.  I guess they didn't want to deal with the judgment they would have gotten.

  • That's my nephew's name. Well Nolan, anyway.

NMS...I think that Nolan really isn't one of those gender neutral type of names.

  • My older daughter is Harper and I know of a ton of other little girls named Harper (it's gotten insanely popular since I named her 2.5 years ago!) but Nolan is most definitely a boy name to me. In fact, it was our "back up" name if Harper came out with the wrong parts ;-)

  • I think names have gotten pretty fluid in their gender associations. While Nolan skews male, once upon a time I would have said Eliott was clearly a boy name, too, and yet it's trending for girls right now. It seems to only work boy name to girl name, though.

  • yeah, Nolan was on our boys list.  Harper would have been so much better but methinks Harper is the new Emma or Bella.  SO popular.

  • I actually have a girl Nolan in one of my classes and she is one of the sweetest, prettiest girls I've ever had in class.  I agree that is it is a bit different but not totally out of the norm!

I agree. It was a lot further down the charts when I named DD that but I think it'll crack the top 100 next year. Especially after the Beckhams used it. Seems like EVERYONE I tell her name to goes "oh I know a little girl named Harper too!" these days. So much for picking out something I thought was going to be unique ;-) At least she might see her name on mugs and keychains some day! My other daughter's name isn't even in the top 1000 though and I doubt it'll ever be popular.
