I Can't STAND the Neighbors DOG

DH and I live in an apartment building. DH works nights and was awake until about  4:30 today between going to my parents for Thanksgiving and when we got home, the neighbors that share the bedroom wall were arguing (usually over drugs.) NOW there is a dog yapping incessantly outside. I have no idea if DH is still sleeping or not, I hope that he was so tired he's sleeping through it. I haven't heard anyone do or say anything to this dog to make him be quiet. It's been at least 10 minutes, and I know it isn't quiet hours yet, and it is a holiday ... but for real. If your dog barks that much, buy a anti barking collar!

Re: I Can't STAND the Neighbors DOG

  • Can't you just go over, explain that your H is trying to sleep as he works overnights & ask them to quiet the dog?

  • I went wandering around trying to find who the dog belongs to, and I couldn't find it. The dog was (I think) outside (based on the volume of the barking), and when I went outside, all the lights in the apartments where the dog was near - were off. By the time I got there, though, the dog was gone.
  • Well, at least it's quiet now.

  • We have the same situation, but we live in a duplex. Our neighbor has a German Shepherd mix who she keeps in a very small kennel in the backyard, both when it's 114 degrees or -12 degrees outside. My H goes to bed early since he has to be up at 4:45 to be at work at 5:00-5:30. She barks incessantly all day, all night because pet parent is too busy partying. We have confronted her about her dog, but she lied to our faces about it. We've called the local animal control about seizing the dog due to mistreatment since the dog is out there in a kennel she can't even turn around in without water and the fact that she lets her dog out to use the bathroom without a leash and we have leash laws here and the dog was at my gate growling aggressively at me a couple of weeks ago (yes, being pregnant, I was terrified) and I couldn't even go to my car, but they're worthless.
Our little Red Raider is here and another is on its way!

  • I think you need to make an attempt to find the owner and have a discussion. Maybe it would even go over better when you're not upset and in the moment. Explain it's been happening, you wanted to see what an agreeable solution could be, etc.

Just make sure to document everything. Photos, videos, audio. Call animal control if you can't locate the owner and say there's a loose dog wreaking havoc.

PS, not that it's relevant, but anti bark collars are cruel, and a poor substitute for training. Teaching the dog to bark at the right times should be the goal, not teaching the dog that barking is bad.

I've been trying to find the owner, and will continue to do so. I don't want to tell the landlord because I'm afraid they'll tell the owner they have to get rid of the dog and I don't want them to throw it in the pound, or worse, out in the streets. I'm pretty sure that it belongs to someone in the apartment building, but we live in a building that's got about 50 apartments in it, so locating the owner could be difficult.

I didn't mean a shock anti bark collar - I hate those. I meant a spray one, that sprays out the citronella. Normally, I dislike collars like that no matter what, but I owned a dog (I just had to put him down at the beginning of October) who was unable to learn anything because of his past and how he was treated (kept in an inside kennel 18-20 hours per day with 2 other dogs, never socialized, did all his business in the kennel - the owners kept the dogs because it thought that it showed prestige. They'd bring the dogs out if they had company.) My vet said that he had no ability to learn anything because he had not been taught anything or socialized as a puppy, and therefore he was, well, literally dumb. (Mentally challenged, I guess, is a nice way to say it.) So, for "normal" dogs I don't like them, in MY dogs case (and other dogs in a similar situation) it was necessary because he'd bark at ME when I walked in the door and go on for 20 minutes!
