2nd time moms- question

Are you reusing baby #1's crib mattress with baby #2? ?I've read about the SIDS risks of using hand-me-down mattresses (the fungi/baby body heat/gases), but I don't know what to think really. ?Jake is in his big boy bed already and the mattress is in perfect condition. ?I just can't decide if I should take the chance or not. ?What are your thoughts?

  • We are using the same one. We spent the money and bought a pretty high quality one to begin with and we always had the bed pad on it etc so I am pretty confident that I can share them between kiddos.

Also the bed has stayed in our house and was never in storage so really it is the same as if my dd was still using it (it tems of temp changes etc.). It is also still super firm and no signs of wear and tear at all.

  • I have the links at home, so I can post them later today.  It was two articles about a study in New Zealand on the chemicals used in mattresses and how it related to SIDS.  They found the stuff they add to make the mattress fire resistant gives off a dangerous gas when combined with fungus and bacteria, which is created by excretions from the baby.  So, baby 1 pees, poops, drools, spits up and it gets in the mattress and the gasses start leaking.  The gasses are heavier than air, so they go down, but if the baby's face is toward the mattress or the air flow in the room is poor, they can still inhale it. The longer the mattress sits around, the more bacteria is developed.  So, keep the fan on, keep them on their back, etc.  Anyway, the study recommends wrapping the mattress in a certain kind of plastic, with the bottom open.  They sell the stuff at Home Depot.  We are currently planning on using the same mattress and wrapping it, but haven't actually done it yet.

I'll post the links, but that will get you started.

  • I didn't accept a "good as new" mattress from my brother for Elena b/c of what I had read about SIDS risk, etc, but yeah, I did reuse Elena's mattress for Julia.  I guess b/c it was in my own home and everything.

I know the Baby Bargains book recommended new mattress for each kid, but my mattress is plastic covered and I thoroughly cleaned it and just didn't see the point.  Of course I would have been sick if something happened to Julia...  I guess its a personal comfort thing to an extent.

  • I just wanted to add- I am still considering getting a new mattress and will wrap it if we do get one.

After the studies came out, no SIDS deaths were reported on wrapped mattresses in New Zealand.  I am doing everything that reduces the chances, but the fact that someone found something that when followed, eliminated deaths is worth doing in my book.

  • we got the cheapy one recommended by baby bargains.  i think it was only around $75 so we'll be getting a new one.  i'm also not really sure when we'll move lily to a big girl bed, so there will probably be some overlap of when the kids are in cribs anyway.

    good luck with the decision!

  • I just read a bunch of stuff and can't find anything on say a newer mattress or ones made in the US. I found the one study but that from 1989.

Right now it seems like a weak correlation and not causation. Also, it does not discuss the age or if you know the history of the mattress. I mean our matress is 2 years old and was never used w/out a waterproof pad on it. So, the drool etc---was not on there. Also, newer SIDS research is not fully supportive of something like this.

interesting and I will keep reading but my gut so far is that it is fine....

  • We bought a new mattress and a new crib for DD but only bc DS is still using his crib. He hasn't tried to climb out of it, so we are leaving him in it as long as possible.

Sorry, I'm  probably of no help to you! Glad you're doing ok for now, hoping that baby cooperates and stays in there a little longer!! You are in my thoughts.
